1. 1) Read the following extract and answer the questions set below it :
Every field of knowledge now a days is becoming vast. Books are one of the
most important sources of knowledge. Milton said ‘A good book is precious
life blood of a master spirit. The spirit of the author lives through his book.
From book any number of persons can get knowledge at a time. They are a
medium of exchange of ideas, knowledge and information’.
Bacon said ‘Reading makes a full man. The horizon of one’s experiences
widens with the increase in his reading. But now, to get books and read them
to supply books to the individuals, a library is needed. Every school and
college needs a library. It is necessary for both pupils and teachers. Even the
general public needs a library. So there is a great need for good libraries’.
A good library contains sufficient number of good books. Every book is not
worth preserving. Only the good books should be placed in libraries. A good
library is a treasure house of knowledge and experiences. Some pupils find it
difficult to read at home for want to privacy etc. They can go to the library and
read there. A library develops reading knowledge, habits. This leads to
achievements in their future life. Hence the need for a good library.

1. 2) Read the following extract and answer the questions set below it :
A nurse takes care of the patients admitted to a hospital. She has to deal with
people who are in misery. No one likes to spend time in a hospital. A nurse
sometime has to help people to relieve themselves. It involves menial jobs.
Yet nursing is a noble profession. The name Florence Nightingale Springs to
my mind when I think about a nurse. She used to work all day with patients.
Even then, in the evening she used to go from bed to bed with a lamp to serve
the injured soldiers.
If the nurse behaves affectionately with the patients, they forget their agony
and recover faster. An expert nurse always talks with a patient while giving
injection. The patient does not feel the pain of injection as he is engrossed in
the conversations.
The dress of a nurse is usually white which is very soothing for the eyes.
Very few people come to thank their nurse after they get well. So mostly it is
a thank less job. If someone asks me, “Who is as great a person as a mother ?”
I would reply without blinking, “A nurse”.
