Chapter Name : Should Wizard Hit Mommy?

Q1 What is the moral issue that the story raises?

Answer. The moral issue of the story encompasses the difference in the perceptions of children
and adults. When the children are only able to focus on smaller things which bring them
happiness, adults have a larger purview instilled with realism and wisdom.

Roger skunk was surrounded by unhappiness until he was endowed with the smell of roses by
the wizard. He was happy after he smelled better and made a lot of friends. That was the
ultimate happiness for him. Jo liked it that way as well but disliked the mommy of the skunk for
bringing him in his original form, while Jack tried to explain through the ending of the story that
nothing is better than accepting reality in its most authentic form.

Q2 How does Jo want the story to end and why?

Answer. Jo was unhappy with the ending of the story because Roger skunk was turned into its
original form, the stinking one. The form, when he was unhappy most of the times due to lack of
friendship and acknowledgement. This made Jo dislike the story for its ending when Roger's
mother pressured him for being that smelly creature again and hit the wizard for his deeds. Jo
wanted to have his mother hit by the wizard instead and desired that the rosy smell of the Roger
lasts forever.

Q3 Why does Jack insist that it was the wizard that was hit and not the mother?

Answer. Jack was a parent who tried to inculcate some values in her daughter Jo, through his
fictional stories. In this story, Jack made an ending that seemed upright as a parent but equally
disappointing to his daughter. Jack laid emphasis on reality and acceptance rather paying heed
to friendships and what others think. He made the mother skunk to hit the wizard for his deed of
changing her son's smell. On the other hand, Jo believed that it should be the mother being hit
by the wizard for wanting her son back in his stinking form when he was disliked by all and had
no friends.

Q4 What makes Jack feel caught in an ugly middle position?

Answer. Jack wanted to help his pregnant wife who was painting the workwood but Jo's
continuous questions and interruptions kept him busy with her. He tried to end up in brief to
make her fall asleep, but it went the other way. He had to drag his story in order to satiate his
daughter. On the other hand, his wife was quite disappointed by him for his inability to help her
by uttering a long story. This way he was completely puzzled and caught in an ugly middle
position mentally and physically too.

Q5 What is your stance regarding the two endings to the Roger Skunk story?

Answer. Both the endings are quite baffling. In the case of Jo, she wanted to have the mommy
skunk to have hit by the wizard, lasting the rosy smell of the Roger skunk forever so that he can
have more friends. But this would never instill in her the quality of respecting one's individuality
over what others want. On the other hand, Jack kept the ending a bit disappointing for Jo. His
ending was sort of imposition by the parents on children. He didn't explain to her the importance
of respecting one's individuality but created a negative impact by the ending on her daughter. It
could have been more sorted if key factors of values and principles would have involved by him
in the storyline.

Q6 Why is an adult’s perspective on life different from that of a child’s?

Answer. An adult's perspective of life is based on experience. While the children have a smaller
purview of perceiving things lacking experience. Their innocence and kindness seek happiness
and acknowledgement from their friends and family. While adults deal with things keeping the
harsh reality of the world in mind and pay heed to realism unlike children who have a fairytale
kind of perception towards life.
