Plastic has long been with us, It became well known in the 1930’s and
particularly in 1940 through a great deal of publicity, as a major substitute
for other materials. Since then it has steadily increased its influence over
our lives. In 1976, plastic outstripped steel to become America’s most widely
used material.

Page 4

The basic raw materials for the manufacture of plastic are petroleum and
natural gas, but plastic can also be made from coal or from wood. These
hydrocarbons materials are processed into a waxy, mouldable stuff called resin.
Plastic require only one tenth of the energy required to produce aluminium,
and inspite of the enormous volume involved, plastic accounts for only five
per cent of U.S. petroleum consumption. But plastic also presents some special
problems. Although the basic resin-manufacturing process presents a much
cleaner face than a steel mill; it is also true that many of the ingredients
are dangerous. Benzene, for example, which goes into the manufacture of
polyester, and nylon, is a member of the dangerous family of carcinogens.
Common types of plastic produce toxic gases when burned, and that non-
plastics may be more likely to catch fire or start fires. Carbon reinforced plastics
create a particular problem — when burned they release clouds of tiny fiber
that can get into electrical equipment and cause short circuits.

One concern of environmentalists is that many plastics do not decay nor can
they be recycled, and that used plastic is increasing our already serious problem
of solid waste and litter.

passage, answer the questions given below in complete sentences in

The kind and variety of fittings, appliances and concepts present in the Indian
market have completely redefined the traditional cooking. Every housewife
must make her own choice in selecting the appliance to suit her needs.

Toasters have been a regular fixture in the kitchen- from the pop-up ones
to the very contemporary sandwich toasters. Most essential for the working
woman, is the mixer grinder. This has multi-purpose facilities. Those available
in the Indian market are grinders, those with a juicer and grinder and the
hand mixer. The choice of the gas stove would depend on the size and the
need of the family.

Perfect for a small family is a two burner gas stove whereas a four-burner
one is ideal for large families.

With these appliances at her disposal, the modern housewife will find cooking
fun, whether it is everyday meals or elaborate exotic recipes.
