(2) Read the following passage carefully and answer the following

Education gives a person the ability to be independent and take his

own decisions in the society, free from any prejudices. Education also

serves as other purposes, like securing the job in government and

private sectors.

As a result of the rising number of educated people in the society, it

is extremely impossible for the state to provide jobs to one and all,

although the constitution of free India demands such. In this context

self-employment is the only remedy available before the state.

The state should be able to provide a clear understanding of self-

employment schemes to the people in society. This measure can be

achieved by conducting several workshops and seminars by the

Directorate of Employment Exchange and exploiting the various

benefits to the educated youth in the 21st century.

Steps need to be taken drastically in the society to give all the

youngsters a proper boost to launch their own private enterprises.

On the basis of your reading of the above passage, complete the

(2) Read the passage given below and answer the question that

follows :

The television set has become such a ubiquitous part of households

all over India that it seems to be a ‘natural’ part of our lives. However,

this natural phenomenon is accompanied by conflicts and compromises

in the power structures and power struggles within the family. These

conflicts are often a result of large changes in social structures, like

the emergence of the nuclear family in suburbs, conflicts between

generations in urban households, etc. The television set, with its

ability to merge the domestic and the global, the nation and the

individual, the present, the past and glimpses of the future has become

the focal point around which new real-life domestic dramas are being

created and acted out in thousands of homes across the country.

Intimate and personal habits are changing: meal times are organized

around the times of favorite television shows or being carried out of

the dining room to be eaten in front of the set. It has been found that

people are sleeping less. However, more interesting for scholars

analyzing the changing patterns of social history is the intangible, yet

real change that is affecting the lifestyles and values of the viewers.

Dissatisfaction with the power structure within large families, where

three generations lived together, was expressed by women in terms of

who had the power to control when the television set would be

switched on and what would be watched. Sometimes this was couched

in terms that referred to the generation of children, in the family: how

their grandparents would keep the television blaring even when the

children had their examinations, or how the grandparents would keep

the television blaring even when the children had their examinations,

or how the children watched inappropriate programmes with their

grandparents and their mothers were powerless to stop them. One

woman, aged 22, grumbled about how she had to disconnect the cable

connection because her mother-in-law was watching too much television

and it was affecting her health. Many of the women felt that television

had increased the intra-family conflicts and thus had a disturbing effect

on their lives.

Other comments revealed that a sense of powerlessness was felt by the

women. In most homes, adult women were the main viewers of

television, however when it came to decision making, woman-

whatever their age and status in the family-had to follow the decisions

of the males of the family, even if it was a young brother-in-law or

teenaged son. In fact many women spoke of how they would congregate

in someone’s house to watch their favorite serials or soaps if they knew

that the men in that particular household would be away. The sports

programming, especially the one- day cricket matches, were usually the

male’s choice, while the women wanted to watch the daily episodes of

the Bengali and Hindi serials. Woman could not determine the

programmes to be watched in many households. In several cases, the

women specifically mentioned that they were forced to ‘compromise’ or

‘sacrifice’ in order to maintain peace at home. They put this in the

larger context of how the women's role within the family has to be of

submission and compromise, to maintain harmony and peace within

the home.
