Component IV
General English and Comprehension
Read the passage carefully and answer the next seven questions.
Most organisations say they value feedback, yet few are built to hear it. A junior employee who notices a
flaw in a product must usually pass the message through several layers of supervisors, each of whom
may soften it, delay it or quietly drop it. By the time the warning reaches someone with the power to act,
the problem has often grown expensive. The difficulty is rarely that leaders do not want to know; it is that
the path along which bad news travels is long, and every step on it carries a small personal risk for the
messenger.
Good managers shorten that path. They walk the shop floor, sit in on customer calls and ask open
questions rather than ones that invite a polite 'yes'. More importantly, they react to unwelcome news with
curiosity instead of irritation. An employee who is thanked for reporting a mistake will report the next one
sooner; one who is blamed will learn to stay silent. Over time these small reactions add up to a culture,
and culture decides whether problems surface early, when they are cheap to fix, or late, when they are
not.
Listening, however, is not the same as agreeing. A manager who acts on every suggestion soon loses
direction, and a team that sees its ideas adopted without scrutiny may stop thinking carefully about them.
The skill lies in taking each view seriously, testing it against evidence and explaining the final decision,
especially when it goes against the person who raised the concern. People can accept being overruled;
what they resent is being ignored.
There is also a practical limit. A manager cannot personally hear every voice in a large firm, so the habit
must be built into systems: anonymous surveys, regular reviews of complaints and clear routes for raising
concerns without fear. Systems alone, though, cannot create trust. They work only when employees see
that what they report leads to visible action.
76. Which of the following best states the main idea of the passage?
(A) Bad news should reach decision-makers quickly and safely
(B) Managers should accept every suggestion made by their employees
(C) Anonymous surveys are the best way to run a large firm
(D) Junior employees are usually unwilling to notice product flaws
77. According to the passage, why does a warning often reach leaders too late?
(A) Leaders refuse to read any report sent up by junior staff
(B) Customers complain only after a product fails
(C) Employees do not notice flaws in the products
(D) It must pass many layers, each risky for the messenger
78. According to the passage, an employee who is thanked for reporting a mistake will:
(A) report the next mistake more quickly
(B) stop looking for further mistakes
(C) report mistakes only to customers
(D) expect a reward for every report
79. What is the author's view about listening to employees?
(A) Managers should overrule employees to keep control
(B) Listening is the same thing as agreeing
(C) Views should be tested on evidence and decisions explained
(D) Managers should act at once on every suggestion that they receive

11. (B) New income = 66,000; savings = 12% of 66,000 = 7,920.
12. (A) 15 : 12 = 5 : 4.
13. (D) 12 + 15 + 18 + 16 + 20 = 81 hundred = 8,100.
14. (A) Totals: 30, 36, 42, 45, 55 hundred. Increases: 2021 20%, 2022 16.7%, 2023 7.1%, 2024 22.2%. Highest in
2024.
15. (C) (15 − 9)/9 × 100 = 66.67%.
16. (B) (10 + 12 + 12 + 14 + 18)/5 = 66/5 = 13.2 hundred = 1,320.
17. (A) 18/(18 + 12 + 12) = 18/42 ≈ 42.9%.
18. (A) MCA: 8 + 9 + 12 + 15 + 17 = 61. M.Com: 10 + 12 + 12 + 14 + 18 = 66.
19. (D) Readers of at least one = 120 + 90 − 40 = 170, so neither = 200 − 170 = 30.
20. (C) Only A = 120 − 40 = 80.
21. (D) Only A = 80 and only B = 90 − 40 = 50, so 130 of 200 = 65%.

23. (A) Profit rose from 10 lakh to 16 lakh: 6/10 × 100 = 60%.
24. (B) (72 + 85 + 64 + 90 + 79)/5 = 390/5 = 78.
25. (B) In order: 64, 72, 79, 85, 90. The middle value is 79.

32. (D) 1/12 + 1/15 − 1/20 = (5 + 4 − 3)/60 = 6/60 = 1/10, so 10 hours.
33. (B) (2/3) × (3/5) × x = (2/5)x = 48, so x = 120.
34. (A) V = πr²h = (22/7) × 49 × 10 = 1540 cm³.
