1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow : 12
a) Tourists to Jammu and Kashmir have another attraction - afloating post ofice on the Dal
lake in Srinagar, the first in the country. ‘Floating Post Office, Dal Lake’- claimed to be the
only one such post office in the world - is built on an intricately carved marron houseboat,
fastened on the western edge of the Dal lake.

b) This post office lets you avail of all the regular postal services available in the country
while being a float. The seal used on everything posted from floating post office is unique-
along with the date and address, it bears the design of a boatman rowing a shikara on the
Dal lake. The special feature of this post office is that letters posted from here carry a special
design which has the picturesque scenery of Dal lake and Srinagar city. These pictures
reach wherever these letters are posted to and hence promote Kashmir as a tourist destinatiion
across the world.

c) This is actually a heritage post office that has existed since British times. It was called
Nehru Park Post Office before 2011. But then the chief postmaster John Samuel renamed it
is ‘Floating Post Office’.

d) The post office’s houseboat has two small rooms- one serves as the office and the other
a small museum that traces the philatelic history of the state postal department. It has a shop
that sells postage stamps and other products.

e) But for the locals, Floating Post office is more than an object of fascination, 1-2 crore is
deposited per month in Floating Post Office by communities living in and around the Dal
Lake. The lake has several islets that are home to more than 50,000 people.

f) The greatest fear is the recurrence of 2014 like floods in which the houseboat had gone for
a loss uncontrollabyly pushed by the flood. Rescue teams had to anchor it using special
mechanism in a nearby highland. Then it was brought back on the Dal after the water re-
ceded. The biggest boon is that at no time of the year do you need a fan in this Post-office.

2) Read the following passage given below and answer the Questions that follows : 8
a) The defence mechanism of human body is a gift of nature provided to human beings. The
power of our body to fight against various disease producing agents is known as defen-
sive mechanism. This defensive mechanism depends upto various facors which can be
categorized mainly into two types-common factors and special factors.
b) Among the common factors, the most important is the health of human beings. We all
know if we are having a good health, our body automatically remains protected against
diseases. For keeping good health, one should have a nutritious balanced diet. A bal-
anced diet is that which provides all the nutrients a person requires.
c) The skin of our body saves us agians many micro-organisms, provided that it is intact. In
case there are cuts and abrasions on it, the micro-organisms penetrate the body through
those cuts and abrasions and cause diseases. Therefore, a cut or abrasion should never
be left open. In case there is no bandage available, a clean cloth may be used to cover it.
d) Some bacteria reside on and inside the human body. They are our friends and help us in
many ways. They do not cause any disease and by their presence, they do not allow
disease-causing organisms to settle on those places. For example, some bacteria break
down carbohydrates and toxins, and they help us absorb the fatty acids. Bacteria also
help protect the cells in the human intestine from invading pathogens and also promote
repair of damaged tissue.
e) There are few automatic activities of our body known as ‘reflex phonomenon’. Reflexes
are unconscious responses, which means they are automatic and do not requre the brain
to create the action. Some of these automatic activities protect the body against many
infections. This reflex phenomenon includes sneezing,coughing and vomiting.
f) Fever is one of the most important consituents of the defensive mechanism of your body.
The organ which regulates the temperature of our body is known as the hypothalamus.
When micro-organisms after entering the body release toxic products and these reach

the brain through blood, the hypothalamus starts increasing the temperature of the body.
This is how a person gets fever. This fever is very useful for the human body as the rise in
the body temperature kills the disease-causing microbes.
On the basis of your understanding of the above passage, answer the questions given

placed an order for the supply of a new sports goods. So far, you have not received the
goods. Write a letter in 120-150 words to the Sales Manager of ‘Fit and Fine Sports’, HGB
Road, Agartala, requesting a speedy delivery of the goods. 6

Due to insanitary conditions in the locality, the number of flies and mosquitoes has multi-
plied, exposing the residents to multiple diseases. Write a letter to the Municipal Commis-
sioner bringing the problem to his notice and urging him to take urgent action in this

5. Write an article in 150-200 words on impact of continuing destruction of forest and
