Section A

Read the following passage and answer the questions set below it :

Electricity is one of the most important discoveries of Science in the modern

age. Electricity is there in charged clouds and that is why they thunder so

loudly. Probably man took an idea from the clouds and this helped him in

discovering electricity.

Today, electricity is produced in many ways, that is, through hydraulic means,

wind power, the use of coal, nuclear power and so on. Now, even house waste

is being used to generate electricity and energy.

In modern age, we cannot think of life without electricity. Day in and day

out, we are surrounded by objects and machines which work on electricity.

Some of these common household objects and devices are the electric bulb,

electric fan, desert cooler, air conditioner, microwave oven, mixer, juicer,

refrigerator, etc.

Almost all the factories run with electricity. Computer, which has changed

the life on earth, is also run on electricity. Even objects such as mobile

phones etc. which work with the help of satellite, use computer for certain

purposes such as recording, bill charging etc. Thus, it is basically electricity

which has revolutionized life on earth.

Water is a vital natural resource which forms the basis of all life. It is one

of the wonderful gifts for us. Water is a prime natural resource. There are

three types of water namely ground water, surface water, and rain water.

Ground water is present in the pores, gaps of rocks and dirt. About 30 per

cent of all readily available freshwater in the world is groundwater.

Groundwater contains saline water. There are two types of groundwater-

aquifers and well.

Surface water includes bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, ponds and

streams. Rainfall is the natural supply of surface water. It contains salt water

as well as fresh water. There are three types of surface water- perennial,

ephemeral and man-made.

Rainwater can be collected from rooftops and other surfaced and utilized. It

can be used by reusing water that has been saved on roofs and surfaces.

Rainwater contains pure water.
