वर्णाः द्विविधाः भवन्ति – स्वराः व्यञ्जनानि च ।
(१) स्वराः
स्वराणाम् उच्चारणं स्वतन्त्ररूपेण भवति ।
स्वराः द्विविधाः सन्ति – समानाक्षराणि सन्ध्यक्षराणि च ।
ह्रस्वः दीर्घः
१. समानाक्षराणि अ आ
वर्णमालायाम् आदौ ये सामान्याः स्वराः इ ई
सन्ति, ते समानाक्षर-स्वराः भवन्ति । उ ऊ

२. सन्ध्यक्षराणि **
– ए
द्वयोः निश्चित-स्वरयोः सन्धिद्वारा – ऐ
ये नवीनाः स्वर-वर्णाः जायन्ते, – ओ
ते सन्ध्यक्षर-स्वराः भवन्ति ।
– औ

अ + उ ओ अ + ओ औ
