 If a quantity y varies with another quantity x, satisfying some rule y = f(x),
then dx/dy
 f ′(x) represents the rate of change of y with respect to x and (dy/dx)x=x0
 f′(x0) represents the rate of change of y with respect to x at x = xo.

Increasing & Decreasing
Let f(x) be a real function defined on I = (a, b) or [a, b) or (a, b] or [a, b].
Suppose f is continuous on I and differentiable in (a, b). If
(i) f ′(c) > 0 ∀ c ∈(a, b) then f is strictly increasing on I.
(ii) f ′(c) < 0 ∀ c ∈ (a, b) then f is strictly decreasing on I.
(iii) f ′(c)  0 ∀ c ∈ (a, b) then f is increasing on I.
(iv) f ′(c)  0 ∀ c ∈ (a, b) then f is decreasing on I
 A function f is said to be increasing on an interval (a, b) if x1 < x2 in (a, b)
⇒ f(x1) < f(x2) for all x1, x2 ∈ (a, b).
 A function f is said to be decreasing on an interval (a, b) if x1 < x2 in (a, b)
⇒ f(x1) > f(x2) for all x1, x2 ∈ (a, b).
A function is called monotonic, if it is either increasing or decreasing.
Critical point
A point x = c in the domain of the function f is said to be a critical point of the function f
if either f ′(c) = 0 or f ′(c) does not exist or f is not differentiable
Example: For the function f(x) = x2 - 4x + 6, x = 2 is a critical point
 The critical point x = c of a function f separates the increasing and decreasing parts of
the function if f 11  c   0 .

Stationary point
A point x = c in the domain of the function is said to be a stationary point of
y =f(x) if f ′(c) = 0.
Example: The stationary points of f(x) = sin x are ± π/2, ±3 π/2, ±5 π/2.....
Maxima and Minima
 The global minimum value is also called absolute minimum or least value
 The global maximum value is also called absolute maximum value or greatest
value
 Relative maximum is also called as local maximum
 Relative minimum is also called as local minimum.
 A turning point of a function f is a point of either relative maximum or relative
minimum.
First derivative test
Given a curve y = f(x),
 For the stationary point at x = a, Second derivative test
