CHAPTERWISE MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS FOR COMPETATIVE EXAM
SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS – II PUC
NAME OF THE CHAPTER: DETERMINANTS
Definition:
To every square matrix 𝐴 = [𝑎𝑖𝑗 ] of order n, we can associate a number called determinant
of a square matrix 𝐴. The determinant of the matrix A is denoted by |𝐴| 𝑜𝑟 ∆ 𝑜𝑟 𝑑𝑒𝑡 𝐴.
Note: Sign of the 2 × 2 determinant is as follows
+ −
| |
− +
Sign of the 3 × 3 determinant is as follows
+ − +
|− + −|
+ − +
Expansion of 𝟐 × 𝟐 determinant:
𝑎11
𝑎12
If 𝐴 = [𝑎 𝑎 ] is a square matrix of order 2 then
21 22
𝑎11 𝑎12
𝐷𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝐴 = |𝐴| = |𝑎 | = 𝑎11 𝑎22 − 𝑎12 𝑎21
21 𝑎22
Expansion of 𝟑 × 𝟑 determinant:
𝑎1 𝑎2
𝑎3
If 𝐴 = [𝑏1 𝑏3 ] is a square matrix of order 3 then
𝑏2
𝑐1 𝑐2
𝑐3
𝑎1 𝑎2 𝑎3
𝐷𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝐴 = |𝐴| = |𝑏1 𝑏2 𝑏3 |
𝑐1 𝑐2 𝑐3 3×3
𝑏 𝑏3 𝑏 𝑏3 𝑏 𝑏2
⟹ |𝐴| = 𝑎1 | 2 | − 𝑎2 | 1 | + 𝑎3 | 1 |
𝑐2 𝑐3 2×2 𝑐1 𝑐3 2×2 𝑐1 𝑐2 2×2
⟹ |𝐴| = 𝑎1 (𝑏2 𝑐3 − 𝑐2 𝑏3 ) − 𝑎2 (𝑏1 𝑐3 − 𝑐1 𝑏3 ) + 𝑎3 (𝑏1 𝑐2 − 𝑐1 𝑏2 )
Note: The determinant value of the triangular matrix is the product of the diagonal
elements.

Properties of Determinants:
The value of a determinant is unaltered if it’s rows and columns are interchanged
(𝑖. 𝑒. |𝐴| = |𝐴′ |)
If two rows (or columns) of a determinant are interchanged then sign of the determinant
changes
If in a determinant two rows (or columns) are identical then the value of the determinant is
zero.
If the elements of any row (or column) are zero then the value of the determinant is zero.
If the elements of any row(or column) are multiplied by k then the value of the determinant
is multiplied by k.
If each element in any row (or column) of a determinant is a sum of two terms then the
determinant can be expressed as a sum of 2 determinants.
If to the elements of any row (or column) of a determinant the same multiples of the
corresponding elements of the other rows (or columns) of the determinant are added then the
value of the determinant is unaltered
The value of a determinant of upper triangular matrix or lower triangular matrix is equal to
product of the principal diagonal element.
Area of the triangle formed by the vertices (𝒙𝟏 , 𝒚𝟏 ), (𝒙𝟐 , 𝒚𝟐 ) & (𝒙𝟑 , 𝒚𝟑 ) is given by
𝒙𝟏 𝒚𝟏 𝟏
𝟏
∆= 𝟐 |𝒙𝟐 𝒚𝟐 𝟏|
𝒙𝟑 𝒚𝟑 𝟏
Equation of the line passing through the points (𝒙𝟏 , 𝒚𝟏 ) and (𝒙𝟐 , 𝒚𝟐 ) is given by
𝒙𝟏 𝒚𝟏 𝟏
|𝒙𝟐 𝒚𝟐 𝟏| = 𝟎
𝒙 𝒚 𝟏
Note: - 1) |𝑘𝐴| = 𝑘 𝑛 |𝐴| where 𝑘 is a constant and 𝑛 is the order of the matrix 𝐴
2) If 𝐴 and 𝐵 are the square matrices of same order then |𝐴𝐵| = |𝐴||𝐵|
3) The determinant of a skew symmetric matrix of odd order is 0
4) The determinant of a skew symmetric matrix of even order is a perfect square.
Minors, Cofactors and Adjoint:
Minor: The minor of an element 𝑎𝑖𝑗 is the value of the determinant obtained by deleting 𝑖 𝑡ℎ row
and 𝑗 𝑡ℎ column of the matrix. The minor of the element 𝑎𝑖𝑗 is denoted by 𝑀𝑖𝑗 .
Cofactor: The cofactor of an element 𝑎𝑖𝑗 of a matrix is denoted and defined by𝐴𝑖𝑗 = (−1)𝑖+𝑗 𝑀𝑖𝑗 ,
Where 𝑀𝑖𝑗 is minor of the element 𝑎𝑖𝑗

Example: Let 𝐴 = (4 5 6) be any 3 × 3 matrices.
7 8 9
1 2
Now Minor of element 6 = 𝑀23 = | | = 8 − 14 = −6
7 8
Now cofactor of element 6 = 𝐴23 = (−1)2+3 𝑀23 = (−1)5 (−6) ⟹ 𝐴23 = (−1)(−6) = 6
Cofactor matrix:
The cofactor matrix of a square matrix 𝐴 is the matrix obtained by replacing the elements
of 𝐴 by its corresponding cofactors
Adjoint of the Matrix:
The adjoint of the matrix 𝐴 is the transpose of the cofactor matrix 𝐴 and it is denoted by 𝑎𝑑𝑗𝐴.
If the elements of any row (or column) are multiplied by there corresponding cofactors and
added, then there sum is the value of the determinant.
𝒂𝟏𝟏 𝑨𝟏𝟏 + 𝒂𝟏𝟐 𝑨𝟏𝟐 + 𝒂𝟏𝟑 𝑨𝟏𝟑 = |𝑨|
If the elements of a row (or column) are multiplied by the cofactor of the corresponding
elements of any other row (or column) and added, then their sum is zero.
𝒂𝟐𝟏 𝑨𝟏𝟏 + 𝒂𝟐𝟐 𝑨𝟏𝟐 + 𝒂𝟐𝟑 𝑨𝟏𝟑 = 𝟎
Note: 1) If 𝐴 is a square matrix of order 𝑛 and |𝐴| ≠ 0 then |𝑎𝑑𝑗 𝐴| = |𝐴|𝑛−1
2) For a square matrix, 𝐴(𝑎𝑑𝑗 𝐴) = (𝑎𝑑𝑗 𝐴)𝐴 = |𝐴|𝐼
𝐴
3) (𝑎𝑑𝑗 𝐴)−1 = 𝑎𝑑𝑗(𝐴−1 ) = |𝐴|
4) 𝑎𝑑𝑗 𝐴𝑇 = (𝑎𝑑𝑗 𝐴)𝑇
5) |𝐴−1 | = |𝐴|−1
6) 𝑎𝑑𝑗(𝑎𝑑𝑗 𝐴) = |𝐴|𝑛−2 𝐴
7) 𝑎𝑑𝑗(𝑘𝐴) = 𝑘 𝑛−1 𝑎𝑑𝑗 𝐴
Singular Matrix:
A square matrix 𝐴 is said to be singular if |𝐴| = 0
Non singular Matrix:
A square matrix 𝐴 is said to be non-singular if |𝐴| ≠ 0
Inverse of a matrix:
Let 𝐴 be a square matrix. If 𝐵 is matrix such that 𝐴𝐵 = 𝐵𝐴 = 𝐼,
then 𝐵 is called inverse of 𝐴 and it is denoted by 𝐴−1 .
𝟏
Inverse of the matrix exist if 𝑨 is non singular and 𝑨−𝟏 = |𝑨| (𝒂𝒅𝒋 𝑨).

Consistency and Inconsistency of a System of Equation:
A system of equation is said to be consistent if it has a solution.
A system of equation is said to be inconsistent if it has no solution.
System of linear equations 𝒂𝟏 𝒙 + 𝒃𝟏 𝒚 = 𝒄𝟏 and 𝒂𝟐 𝒙 + 𝒃𝟐 𝒚 = 𝒄𝟐 has
𝑎1 𝑏
(i) Unique solution if, ≠ 𝑏1
𝑎 2 2
