The Peasant Movement or Agrarian Struggle began in the days before the colonial
period. Between 1858 and 1914, these movements became limited to issues of

locality, division, and specific grievances. The Indigo Revolt of 1859-62 was against
indigo cultivation, and the Deccan Revolt of 1875 was against the exploitation by
moneylenders. Many of the issues associated with these movements persisted, and
under Mahatma Gandhi's leadership, they became partially linked to the freedom
struggle. For example, the Bardoli Satyagraha of 1928 was a campaign against
high land revenue, which became part of the nationwide Non-cooperation
Movement. The Champaran Satyagraha of 1917-18 was against indigo cultivation.
The peasant resistance movements of 1920 were in opposition to the British
government's agricultural policies, and in some regions, farmers also rose against
local governance.
