The old banyan tree in the village square was a world in itself. It wasn't just a tree; it
was a home, a playground, and a wise, silent friend to everyone. It’s long, hanging
roots, which looked like the beards of old men, were perfect for swinging. During
hot summer afternoons, travellers would rest in its vast, cool shade, feeling instantly
refreshed. Children would play hide-and-seek among its massive trunk and roots,
their laughter echoing through the leaves. Many tiny creatures, from chirping spar-

branches. The tree had seen generations of villagers grow up, and it stood as a pa-

Varun loved the annual Sports Day at his school, but this year was different. A new
event had been introduced: balancing on a narrow wooden beam. Varun was nimble
and quick, but he had a deep fear of falling. Just the thought of the wooden beam
made his palms sweat. For weeks, he avoided practicing that part. "I'll just be extra
fast in the other parts," he told his friend, Aisha.

Page 4

Aisha shook her head. "That won't be enough, Varun. You must face what scares
you." The day before the race, she took him to the beam. He hesitated, his feet feel-
ing like lead. "Don't look down," Aisha advised. "Look at the tree straight ahead and
just imagine you are walking on a normal path." Taking a deep breath, Varun
stepped onto the beam. His legs wobbled, but he kept his eyes fixed on the tree. Step
by step, he made it across. He didn't just walk; he conquered his fear. He knew now
that winning the race wasn't as important as winning the battle in his own mind.

a) not a fast runner.
b) afraid of losing the race to Aisha.

d) is not a good player.

2. The phrase "his feet feeling like lead" is used to show that Varun was
a) wearing very heavy shoes.
b) feeling too scared and nervous to move easily.
c) tired from running too much.
d) excited to start the race.

3. What was the most important lesson Varun learned at the end of the pas-
sage?
a) That winning Sports Day is the most important goal.
b) That Aisha is a faster runner than him.
c) That practicing for a race is very difficult.
d) That overcoming a personal fear is a great achievement.

4. What piece of advice from Aisha helped Varun cross the beam?
a) To run as fast as he could.
b) To focus on a fixed point ahead instead of looking down.
c) To hold her hand while walking on the beam.
d) To skip the balancing beam part of the race.

5. Which of the following words best describes Aisha's character in the story?
