1.1. Read the following extract and answer the questions set below :

People who live in cities are well aware of pollution. It is everywhere on the

roadsides in the form of garbage and in the air in the form of toxic gases.

Vehicles and factories spew tonnes of unwanted gases into the atmosphere.

Diseases of the lung and the chest are common in the cities.

Plenty of chemical and industrial waste gets thrown into Lakes and rivers

and seas as well. The creeks in and around Mumbai are full of dirt, excreta

and used plastic bags. Garbage piles up everywhere and the municipality

in unable to remove it. sadly we lack a sense of cleanliness.

Noise pollution is the worst, especially during festival time. Loudspeakers

blare out music right up to late at night. Bursting crackers has become a

national pastime. Even vehicles have horns tooting continously when there

is a traffic jam.

What is needed is an awareness of the various types of pollution and how

we are affected by them. Then the Government should take strict measures

to control them. Otherwise our nation is going to be a highly polluted one

indeed !

1.2. Read the following extract and answer the questions set below it :

The great singer known to every Indian, and the most beloved is Lataji,

called affectionately Lata Didi by many. She was born in Indor on September

28, 1929. Her father was Pt. Dinanath Mangeshkar. He was a classical singer

and had his own drama troupe. They were four sisters-Lata, Meena, Asha

and Usha-and one brother, Hridayanath. The children spent most of their

childhood going from one place to another with their father.

Since the family was travelling all the time the children had little or no

schooling. Lataji’s father gave them music lessons in early life. He died in

1942, Lataji started acting in Marathi movies when she was only 13, she

began riyaaz with Amanat Ali Khan who was a renowned master of classical

music. But it was Ghulam Haider and Noushad who recognised the telent

in her and gave Lataji her big break in Hindi movies.

In those days there were famous singers like Noor Jahan and Shamshad

Begum, who had rich thick voices. Everyone used to say that Lataji’s voice

was very thin. But it was this voice that finally gave her fame and stardom

Lataji has performed a number of programmes in various parts of the world.

Lataji has received every possible award. Her name has been entered in the

Guinness Book of World Records for singing the most number of songs in

the world. In 1999 she received the Padma Vibhushan and in 2001, the

Bharat Ratna, which is the highest civilian award. She has received about

250 trophies and 150 gold medals in her entire carrer.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam is one of the world famous Scientist of India. He
was born on 15 October 1931. This father was Jainulabdeen and mother
was Ashiamma. They led a very simple lifestyle. They imbibed good moral
values in their children. His education began in a rural primary school
at Rameshwaram. He later took his degree in Physical from St. Joseph
College, Tiruchirapalli. He served as the 11 president of India. from 2002
to 2007.
