The Andalusian scientist ibn Rumiyah undertook extensive journeys in search of plants and herbs which were not found in
his native land. He travelled to Egypt, Syria, and Iraq in the course of his itinerary and carefully recorded his observations.
Ibn al‐Baytar (d. 646/1248) travelled far and wide and collected botanical specimens from different parts of the world. He
compared the flora of India and Persia with those of Greece and Spain. His work Al‐Jami al‐Mufradat al‐Adwiyah wal‐
Aghziyah, which describes fourteen hundred plants, has been acclaimed by Western scholars as a “monument of industry”.
Al‐Ghafiqi wrote an important work in botany, known as Kitab al‐Adwiyah al‐Mufradah. Ibn al‐Jazzar (d. 370/980) wrote an
important book Al‐Itimad fil‐Adwiyah al‐Mufradah, which discussed 278 simple methods of preparing medicaments and
compounds from vegetable, animal and mineral sources. The Latin translation of the book was used in medical teaching in
European universities for several centuries.
