ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION AND IDENTITIES
Important Concepts/ Result
1. Terms are formed by the product of variables and constants, e.g. –3xy, 2xyz, 5x, etc.
2. Terms are added to form expressions, e.g. –2xy + 5x.
3. Expressions that contain exactly one, two and three terms are called monomials, binomials and
trinomials, respectively.
4. In general, any expression containing one or more terms with non– zero coefficients (and with
variables having non–negative exponents) is called a polynomial.
5. Like terms are formed from the same variables and the powers of these variables are also the same.
But coefficients of like terms need not be the same.
6. There are number of situations like finding the area of rectangle triangle, etc. in which we need to
multiply algebraic expressions.
7. Multiplication of two algebraic expressions is again an algebraic expression.
8. A monomial multiplied by a monomial always gives a monomial.
9. While multiplying a polynomial by a monomial, we multiply every term in the polynomial by the
monomial using the distributive law a (b+c) = ab + ac.
10. In the multiplication of a polynomial by a binomial (or trinomial), we multiply term by term, i.e.
every term of the polynomial is multiplied by every term in the binomial (or trinomial) using the
distributive property.

Case Study

5 In a small town, there is a group of students from 'Creative Minds' school. The Mathematics teacher,
Mr. Sharma, has given students a challenge to find the total area of three unique gardens A, B, and C, and to
compare these three gardens to determine which one has the largest area. To complete this challenge, the
students need to apply their knowledge of algebraic expressions and their skills of addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and simplification.
The area of each garden is represented as follows:
Garden A: (x2 + 3x) sq. meters
Garden B: (2x2 – 7x) sq. meters
Garden C: (1/2 x2 + 5x + 8) sq. Meters

Question 1: Find the sum of algebraic expressions representing the area of Garden A and Garden B.
Solution 1:
Sum of the area of Garden A and Garden B
= (x2 + 3x) + (2x2 – 7x)
= x2 + 3x + 2x2 – 7x
= (x2 + 2x2) + (3x – 7x)
= 3x2 – 4x

Question 2: Simplify the algebraic expression representing the area of Garden C.
Solution 2:
Area of Garden C = 1/2 x2 + 5x + 8
Since there are no like terms present, this expression is already simplified.

Question 3: Find the product of the area of Garden A and Garden B.
Solution 3:
Product of area of Garden A and Garden B = x2 + 3x 2x2 – 7x
Now we need to multiply each term in the first expression by each term in the second expression:
a. Monomial multiplied by a monomial = x2 X 2x2 = 2x4
b. Monomial multiplied by a binomial or trinomial (expanding brackets):
= x2 X (–7x) + 3x X (2x2) + 3x X (–7x)
= –7x3 + 6x3 – 21x2
c. Combine the results from steps a and b and simplify the expression:
= 2x4 + (–7x3 + 6x3) – 21x2
= 2x4 – x3 – 21x2
The product of the area of Garden A and Garden B is 2x4 – x3 – 21x2.

Short answer type question

Q1. If A = 5x² – 3x + 2 and B = 2x² + 4x – 5, find the sum and the difference of A and B.
Solution:
𝑆𝑢𝑚: 𝐴 + 𝐵 = (5𝑥² – 3𝑥 + 2) + (2𝑥² + 4𝑥 – 5)
= (5𝑥² + 2𝑥²) + (– 3𝑥 + 4𝑥) + (2 – 5) = 7𝑥² + 𝑥 – 3

𝐷𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒: 𝐴 – 𝐵 = (5𝑥² – 3𝑥 + 2) – (2𝑥² + 4𝑥 – 5)
= (5𝑥² – 2𝑥²) + (– 3𝑥 – 4𝑥) + (2 + 5) = 3𝑥² – 7𝑥 + 7

2. Simplify the following expression using the distributive property: 2(x + 3) + 5(2x – 1)
36

Page 4

Solution:
Using the distributive property, we get:
= 2𝑥 + 6 + 10𝑥 – 5
= 12𝑥 + 1
Therefore, the simplified expression is 12x + 1.

3 Find the product of two trinomials – (2x + y – 3z) and (x + 2y + z) using the distributive property.
Solution:
=(2x + y – 3z)(x + 2y + z)
= (2x)(x) + (2x)(2y) + (2x)(z) + (y)(x) + (y)(2y) + (y)(z) – (3z)(x) – (3z)(2y) – (3z)(z)
= 2x2 + 4xy + 2xz + xy + 2y2 + yz – 3zx – 6zy – 3z2
= 2x2 + 5xy + 2y2 – zx – 6zy +2xz + yz – 3z2

Long answer type questions
1 In the given expressions, (A) 2𝑥 2 – 5𝑥 + 1 and (B) 7x2 – 11x + 2, add and subtract the expressions,
and simplify the resulting expressions. Furthermore, multiply expression (A) with expression (B) using the
distributive property and simplify.
Solution:
Step 1: Addition of algebraic expressions.
(2x2 – 5x + 1) + (7x2 – 11x + 2)
= 2x2 – 5x + 1 + 7x2 – 11x + 2 (Combine like terms.)
= (2x2 + 7x2) + (–5x – 11x) + (1 + 2)
= 9x2 – 16x + 3

Step 2: Subtraction of algebraic expressions.
(2x2 – 5x + 1) – (7x2 – 11x + 2)
= 2x2 – 5x + 1 – 7x2 + 11x – 2 (Combine like terms.)
= (2x2 – 7x2) + (–5x + 11x) + (1 – 2)
= –5x2 + 6x – 1

Step 3: Multiplication of algebraic expressions using the distributive property.
(2x2 – 5x + 1)(7x2 – 11x + 2)
= 2x2(7x2) + 2x2(–11x) + 2x2(2) – 5x(7x2) – 5x(–11x) – 5x(2) + 1(7x2) – 1(11x) + 1(2)
= 14x4 – 22x3 + 4x2 – 35x3 + 55x2 – 10x + 7x2 – 11x + 2
= 14x4 + (–22x3 – 35x3) + (4x2 + 55x2 + 7x2) + (–10x –11x)
= 14x4 – 57x3 + 66x2 – 21x + 2

The added expression is 9x2 – 16x + 3. The subtracted expression is –5x2 + 6x –1. The product of the
expressions using the distributive property is 14x4 – 57x3 + 66x2 – 21x + 2.

2 Consider the following algebraic expressions: expression (A) 3x3 – 5x2 + 4x – 6 and expression (B)
2
2x – 3x + 1. Find the product of expression (A) by the monomial 2y, and expression (B) by the binomial (x
– 4y). Use the distributive property to expand the product.
Solution:
Step 1: Product of expression (A) by the monomial 2y.
(3x3 – 5x2 + 4x – 6)(2y)
= 3x3(2y) – 5x2(2y) + 4x(2y) – 6(2y)
= 6x3y – 10x2y + 8xy – 12y
37

Page 5

Step 2: Product of expression (B) by the binomial (x – 4y).
(2x2 – 3x + 1)(x – 4y)
= 2x2 x + 2x2 –4y – 3x x – 3x –4y + 1 x + 1 –4y
= 2x3 – 8x2y – 3x2 + 12xy + x – 4y

The product of expression (A) and the monomial 2y is 6x3y – 10x2y + 8xy – 12y. The product of
expression (B) and the binomial (x – 4y) is 2x3 – 8x2y – 3x2 + 12xy + x – 4y.
