Directions: Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.
In many hill villages the forest is not a distant wilderness but a neighbour. It supplies firewood, wild
vegetables, bamboo shoots and the timber for houses, and its springs feed the streams that water the
fields below. For generations, village councils have set rules about when trees may be cut and which
slopes must be left untouched. Such rules were not written in books; they were remembered, repeated
and, above all, respected.
When these customs weaken, the change is gradual at first. A few more trees are felled for sale, a hillside
is cleared a year too early, and the springs begin to run thin in the dry months. By the time the loss is
noticed, it is far harder to repair than it would have been to prevent. Where villages have revived their old
rules, setting aside community reserves and banning hunting in them, the results have often been
encouraging: birds return, springs recover and young people discover that conservation can also be a
source of pride and of income from visitors.
The lesson is simple but easily forgotten. Protecting a forest is not the duty of a distant government office
alone; it is most effective when the people who live beside it see it as their own.
