Time : 1h 30 m Marks 40
Section A : Reading
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that
follow :
In recent years, a new system of farming, called Organic Farming, is
fast becoming popular. In conventional farming, the excessive use of
fertilizers affects the salinity of the soil and causes water and soil
pollution. Organic farming makes maximum use of organic manure
and recycled farm wastes, such as livestock excreta and bio agents.
The use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers is minimal or non-
existent.
Organic farmers use bio-agents to the soil. Bio-agents are
organisms such as blue-green algae that release organic matter in to
the soil by their activities. Organic matter improves the composition of
the soil and its water-holding capacity. As a result, the plants grow not
only healthier, but also their produce such as grains, lentils, fruits and
vegetables make healthier food for consumption. Crop rotation is the
practice of growing different types of crops in the same area in
different seasons. It increases the fertility of the soil as dissimilar
plants takes in different nutrients from the soil and often return
nutrients to the soil which have been depleted by previous crops.
Because of its use of organic fertilizers and healthy cropping
techniques, organic farming maintains the fertility of the soil. Organic
produce is safe because it does not contain any harmful pesticide
