One day a wise man was riding along a road. He came across a man who
was fast asleep. As he passed by, he saw a snake sliding into the sleeping man‟s
mouth. The wise man dismounted quickly. He tried to scare the snake away, but
to no avail. He took up his club and struck the sleeping man with several
powerful blows. The sleeping man awakened abruptly. He fled for safety to a
nearby tree. It was an apple tree. The ground around was covered with rotten
fruit. „Eat them!‟ ordered the wise man. He stuffed the mouth of the terrified
man with apples until no more would go in.

„Why are you doing this to me?‟ asked the man. „What have I done to offend
you? If you have a quarrel with me, settle it with your word! Oh, cursed was the
hour that you first saw me, and blessed is the man who never sets eyes on you!
Look! My mouth is pouring with blood and words! O God, I beg Thee, repay him
in like manner!‟ Yet however much the man cursed, the wise man continued to
shower blows. The wise man ordered the other man to run fast. The man ran
with all his might until he vomited. The snake came out of his mouth. The man
thanked the wise man for this treatment. This is how the wise man saved the life
of the sleeping man.

Once, the Maharaja of Travancore ordered a grand dinner in his palace. In the
afternoon before the dinner, the Maharaja entered the kitchen to survey the
dishes that had been prepared for the feast. “What are you going to do with
those vegetable scraps?” he asked the cook, pointing to the basket of scraps
near the cook. The cook replied, “They are waste. We will throw them away.”
“You cannot waste all these bits and pieces of vegetables. Find a way to use
them,” the Maharaja commanded sternly and walked away. The cook was in a fix
and kept staring at the vegetable scraps for some time. Suddenly, an idea
flashed across his mind. He cooked these vegetable scraps after preparing them
well. All the guests liked this recipe so mush and everyone wanted to know its
name. The cook thought and thought. Then a name came to his mind. He named
it avial (uh-vi-ul). Avial became famous all over Kerala and is now one of the
dishes in a traditional Kerala feast. And imagine, it all came from a basket of
waste!
