Read the given passage and answer the questions.
The history of commercial traffic in the Indian Ocean goes back to at least the early
centuries of the Christian era. Networks of trade covering different segments of the Ocean
have a history of remarkable resilience without being resistant to innovation. In other
words, without disrupting the rhythm of the overall flow, variables such as the share in total

evolving situations. Over the centuries, India has played a key role in the successful
l a
functioning of these trading networks. This undoubtedly was related in part to her location
ag
at midpoint geographically, but it also had a good deal to do with her capacity to put on the
market large quantities of relatively inexpensive and highly competitive manufactured
goods in addition to a whole range of other goods. In return, she provided an important
outlet for the specialised agricultural, mineral and other products offered by her trading
partners. Trade thus satisfied different kinds of needs for India as compared with her major
trading partners, and this by itself provided an excellent basis for a significant and growing
level of trade. The key role of India can thus be conceptualised essentially as one of
contributing significantly to the expansion of the basis of trade in the Indian Ocean.

Question 5
Read the given passage and choose the CORRECT option that answers the question that
follows.
Passage: Across the world, neoliberal policies were expected to lead to faster economic
growth and enable benefits to trickle down so that everyone, including the poorest, would
be better off. After 40 years, the numbers are in: growth has slowed and the fruits of that
growth went overwhelmingly to a very few at the top. As wages stagnated and the stock
market soared, income and wealth flowed up, rather than trickling down.
The reality is that, despite its name, the era of neoliberalism was far from liberal. It
imposed an intellectual orthodoxy whose guardians were utterly intolerant of dissent.
Economists with heterodox views were treated as heretics to be shunned, or at best shunted
off to a few isolated institutions.
Even today, advocates of these theories refuse to accept that their belief in self-regulating
markets and their dismissal of externalities as either nonexistent or unimportant led to the
deregulation that was pivotal in fuelling the crisis. If the 2008 financial crisis failed to make
us realise that unfettered markets don’t work, the climate crisis certainly should:
neoliberalism will literally bring an end to our civilization.
Question: The phrase “fruits of that growth” refers to:
Answers
Consistent financial returns.
Better job opportunities.
Greater financial gains.
Sustained wealth creation.
