Chapter Name : Terms , Concepts and Their Use in Sociology

Q1 Why do we need to use special terms and concepts in sociology ?

Answer. The usage of special terms and concepts in sociology is imperative because the
subject of sociology is quite familiar to the social capital that the exclusion is not primarily done
to the respective and universal concepts like family, religion etc. The concepts are important to
highlight the differences in the opinions among individuals and to underline the basic lines of
dissent in society. The location of a particular ideology on the map of the society, requires the
use of terminology and sociological nomenclature.

Q2 As a member of society you must be interacting with and in different groups . How do you
see these groups from a sociological perspective?

Answer. Different identities and Intersectional concepts often are visible along the parameters of
interactions among the different sections of the society.

-The interaction within the caste- based underprivileged sections of the society is mainly
targeted towards a sociological understanding of caste as a 'social construct' empowered by
ages of oppression and legitimacy.

-The interaction on the lines of gender , creates a platform for debate and discourse in sociology
to analyse the 'public' and 'private' spheres again by elaborating upon the gender roles and
gendered discrimination.

-The interaction within the individuals belonging to the turbulent areas, increases the study and
scope of state in the sociological studies mainly on geo-political issues.

Q3 What have you observed about the stratification system existing in your society ? How are
individual lives affected by the stratification ?

Answer. The stratification system of the society mainly runs on the discrimination based on
caste , creed, colour, gender, race, history etc.

- The caste based discrimination often results in having a tumultous impact upon the lives of the
individuals and society as a whole as it creates a barrier for' social liberalism and
intellectualism'. It hinders the occupational mobility of people and restricts the social
consciousness of the masses.

- The religion based discrimination results in the communal and political tensions among the
governing sections of the society. It further creates a sense of intolerance among the people
which further affects the solidarity and empathy within the societal parameters.

-The discrimination on the basis of region and race perpetuates the concepts of racism and
regionalism within a country which further leads to disintegration of thought and land in
particular.

Q4 What is social control? Do you think the modes of social control in different spheres of
society are different ? Discuss.

Answer. The domination and monopolisation of a particular notion or strata of society upon the
materialistic and non- materialistic aspects of society is known as 'social control'.

Yes, the modes of social control are different in different spheres of the society as the religious
sphere of the society is primarily dominated by the religious ideologies and different beliefs must
be subject to the religious legitimacy granted to them by the scriptures, in general. The caste
based society has its social control empowered by the caste system which in turns also result in
the monopoly over the resources , along the lines of caste . The race based society gives
primacy to the notion of "indigenous" and "natives" , where only the former ones are considered
citizens and they are the only ones to enjoy political, social and economic rights.

Q5 Identify the different roles and status that you play and are located in. Do you think roles and
status change? Discuss when and how they change .

Answer. Different roles that as an individual we are subjected to are mainly connected to our
social and political connections. The multiple affiliations with the religion, gender, politics etc
often creates a sense of identity and responsibility among us and these identities change and
are subject to different geo-political issues and social change which mainly affects the
paradigms of oppression and social conditioning. These roles and statuses change due to the
change in the understanding of the society which mainly erupts due to the social or political
awakening empowered by different movements and ideologies.
