Chapter Name : Understanding Social Institutions
Q1 Note what are the marriage rules that are followed in your society. Compare your
observations with those made by other students in the class. Discuss.
Answer. The marriage rules that are followed in the society are primarily patriarchal and
discriminatory in which primacy is always given to the male-dominated section while as the
opinions of the other party are completely negated and nullified to the minimum. The
predominance of child marriage in some societies and the familial interferance into the private
institution of marriage is a major flaw in the societal marriage rules as they are traditional and
stagnant. The other rules in marriages also include the predominance of notion of dowry which
affects the paradigm of consent and consensus among the parties of marriage . The rules
associated with marriage like V-ritual and other discriminative rituals result in the objectification
of women and its celebration too.
The feministic perspective towards the marriage changes from one societal paradigm to another
because of evident social differences and the concept of marriage in different societies is
subject to 'power sharing' where the argumentional and participational capacity is only given to
the male-dominated section. The effect of discrimination upon the institution of marriage
changes the patterns of social control and practices.

Q3 Write an essay on work . Focus on both the range of occupations , which exist and how they
change ?
Answer. The materialistic definition of 'work' is mainly assessed in terms of its monetary value
and the addition to the economic structure of the country. The 'Formal economy' and its
development is also considered as ' work' but the aspects of 'Informal economy' are not taken
into the assessment which results in oppression of particular sections of the society.
The range of occupations range from the household , agriculture , industry etc. These range of
occupations have changed tremendously due to the impact to capitalism and changing social
narratives of the country. The occupations changed to being more industrialised or
money-oriented due to the economic transformation of the society .
The agricultural sector has shown a tremendous decline in regards with the human capital as
the increasing inclination is towards the industrial sectors. Changing occupational patterns are
subject to environment, stipends, and other governing factors of the society.
The recent change in the employment sectors like equal pay , minimum wage etc has created a
colossal change in the occupational structure of the respective countries and gave rise to a new
type of discourse on the lines of occupational equality.

Q6 Write an essay on school as a social institution . Draw from both your reading as well as
your personal observations ?
Answer. The institution of school is imperative for the establishment of the educational premise
which results in the maximum and integrated development of an individual . The school is
responsible for the inculcation of social , cultural and moral norms within the identities of the
students. The most important notion about the 'school' is the essence of interaction and
association within the individuals to negate and assess the validity of the societal stereotypes.
The impact of this institution upon the character building of an individual is tremendous as it
modifies as well as tries to eradicate the fragments of social conditioning from the intellect of
individuals.
Q7 Discuss how these social institutions interact with each other . You can start the discussion
from yourself as a senior student . And moved on to how you are shaped by different social
institutions . Are you entirely controlled or can you also resist and redefine the social
institutions?
Answer. As a senior student , the institution of the family has shaped the dreams , beliefs , faith
etc of my existence as the forces of religion have further empowered the notions of importance
of morality and spirituality in my life . The social identities mixed with the economic institutions
also shaped my position among different classes in the society and also created restraints upon
the choices or preferences. These controlling factors have an impact upon my life and choices
but the resistance through the political and social awakening has helped me to assess these
concepts and create a true balance between tradition and modernity.
