Dr. Kalam was a great scientist–this is indisputable. But he was also
convinced that fact and faith can, together, create a better planet. He once
told me, ‘Science and faith must coexist for the human good. Science provides
focus–focus helps us solve questions, discover the truth and conceive inventions.
Faith provides perspective–perspective helps us see how our creations and
discoveries go on to impact a combination vital for the success of societies.
Science accelerates progress and faith curbs it within reasonable limitations.
If the two function true to their roles, they will work together for the betterment
of humanity.
Dr. Kalam’s own life was nourished by multiple faiths.
His father, a boatman, also served as an imam at their local mosque, and
his two best friends were from two different religions–one was a Hindu and
the other was a Christian. Pakshi Lakshmana Shastrigal was the head priest
of the famous Rameswara temple and a Vedic scholar, and the Reverend Father
Bodal had built the first church on Rameswara Island. Dr. Kalam recalled

‘‘Oh, I see.’’ Then a terrible thing happened. While we were waiting for the

But surely peaches were not in season then ? Lord knew what they cost! I knew
a little later, for my quest going on with her conversation, absentmindedly took one.
‘‘You see, you’ve filled your stomach with a lot of meat,’’ my one miserable
little chop ‘‘and you can’t eat any more. But I’ve just had a snack and I shall enjoy
a peach.’’
The bill came and when I paid it I found that I had only enough for a quite
inadequate tip. Her eyes rested for an instant on the three francs I left for the waiter
and I knew that she thought me mean. But when I walked out of the restaurant
I had the whole month before me and not a penny in my pocket.
‘‘Follow my example,’’ she said as we shook hands, ‘‘and never eat more than
one thing for luncheon.’’
‘‘I’ll do better than that,’’ I retorted, ‘‘I’ll eat nothing for dinner tonight.’’
‘‘Humorist!’’ she cried gaily, jumping into a cab.
‘‘You’re quite a humorist!’’
But I have had my revenge at last. I do not believe that I am a vindictive
man, but when the gods take a hand in the matter it is understandable to observe
the result with satisfaction. Today, she weighs twenty-one stone.

I remember the night my mother

of steady rain had driven him

all year around. For most people, if a product is expensive, it must be superior.
What they don’t realise is that it costs more not because of its premium quality
but because of the massive duty levied on imported food. A lot of locally sourced
produce is just as good, and in some cases, even better. Eating local foods can
help you reduce your carbon footprint by upto 7% and show more love for the
planet. Here are some easy-to-find local heroes.
With lifestyle illnesses on the rise, everyone wants to boost their immunity,
and vitamin C is essential for it. We often end up ignoring local sources of
vitamin C such as amla (the Indian gooseberry). The sour tasting amla offers
our daily requirement of vitamin C which is about 65-90 gm. One serving of
amla contains 600 mg of vitamin ‘C’, and if juiced, its value increases. Easily
available at most local grocers and vegetable vendors, the immunity–boosting
fruit has a bunch of other health benefits : it balances stomach acids, strengthens
the heart and lungs, improves skin and hair texture and is an anti-carcinogenic.
Eat it, fresh and sprinkled with sea salt or chop it into your favourite salad
for a dash of tartness.
Amaranth (rajgira in Hindi) is packed with manganese and just one serving
can fulfil your daily need of this nutrient. Amaranth is also high in antioxidants,
fibre, calcium, phosphorous and iron which helps in strengthening our bones.
You can add ground amaranth seed grains with your flour to make rotis or bread
or eat amaranth puffs as breakfast cereal.
It is so much better to use flaxseeds in your smoothies and salads. Flaxseeds
(alsi in Hindi) not only contains anti-inflammatory Omega-3 fatty acids but also
came laden with monounsaturated fats which are essential for your overall good
health. High in fibre and low in carbohydrates these wonder seeds are also packed
with antioxidants that help improve your skin and hair.
