Q2 Answer the following questions in about 30 words.
(i) If a person is to travel to Lakshadweep, from which coastal plain does he prefer and why?
(ii) Where in India will you find a cold desert? Name some important ranges of this region.
(iii) Why is the western coastal plain is devoid of any delta?
Answer.
(i) That person would choose to start travelling from the Western Coastal plains. Since the
Lakshadweep islands are situated in Arabian Sea. Its distance is lowest from the west side of
Coast. Hence, from that side less time is needed to travel to the island.

(ii) In the Kashmir Himalayas’ North Eastern side, the only cold desert of India is situated. It lies
between Karakoram range and Greater Himalayas section.
(iii) In the Western Coastal plain, the slopes are steep and plains are narrow. The rivers of these
regions flow rapidly in one part. Due to this, they are unable to form any Delta. That’s why
western coastal plain is devoid of any delta.
Q3 Answer the following questions in not more than 125 words.
(i) Make a comparison of the island groups of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
(ii) What are the important geomorphological features found in the river valley plains?
(iii) If you move from Badrinath to Sunderbans delta along the course of the river Ganga, what
major geomorphological features will you come across?

(ii) Those rivers that bring the alluvial deposits, it results in the formation of river valley plains.
Few geomorphological features of the river valley plains are:
● Khadar: It is made up of alluvial deposits which are new. They are fertile lands and are
prone to floods.
● Bhangar: It is made up of old alluvium. They are not fertile and less prone to floods.
● Bhabar: It is a narrow belt that ranges between 8 to 10 km parallel to the foothills of
Shivaliks at the slope’s break.
● Terai: It lies in the south of Bhabar belt. It’s approximate width is 10 to 20 km. From here,
most of the rivers and streams re-emerge. It creates swampy and marshy conditions,
known as Terai.
(iii) Badrinath is a place that lies along the Ganga . On the mouth of Brahmaputra and Ganga
river lies Sundarban delta in the Bay of Bengal. If you move from Badrinath to deltas of
Sundarbans, you would see several geomorphological features. You would come across valleys
of V-shape, waterfalls, georges, rapids, etc. You would also spot Ganga’s tributaries meeting it.
As you enter the Northern plains, you will spot depositional and erosional landforms like
meanders, sandbars, etc.
