(iv) List out two major types of large - scale maps ?
(v) How is a map different from a sketch ?
Answer.
(i) Map generalisation is a way in which every map is drawn with a definite objective. Maps are
drawn with the basic purpose of providing information related to drainage patterns, relief
features, vegetations, types of settlements, means of transport, etc.
(ii) Map design is important as it involves the planning and representation of the graphic
characteristics of maps like appropriate symbols, their sizes and forms, selection of colours and
shades, etc.
It is also important because it gives the basic idea of the features that the represented place
have in reality.
(iii) Small-scale maps are the maps drawn to show large areas at a relatively small-scale.
The different types of small-scale maps are :
● Wall Maps
● Atlas Maps
(iv) Large-scale maps are those maps that are drawn to represent a small area on a relatively
large scale.
The two major types of large-scale maps are :
● Cadastral Maps
● Topographical Maps
(v) A sketch is drawn on a freehand and is not precise as it does not maintain a scale. On the
other hand, a map is drawn with complete precision in consideration of the scale as a priority.

Q3 Write an explanatory account of types of maps.
Answer. Map is a representation of a part or whole of the earth on a piece of paper. Maps are
classified into various types based on different parameters, like :
Based on Scale :
I) Large-scale Maps : Large-scale maps are those maps that are drawn to show small areas at a
relatively large-scale. These maps are further divided into following types :
(a) Cadastral Maps : These maps are prepared by the government agencies to show the
ownership of landed property by demarcating field boundaries of agricultural land and
the plan of individual houses in Urban areas. These maps are also prepared in order to

(b) Topographical Maps : These maps are prepared by the national mapping agencies and
are based on precise surveys. These maps follow uniform colours and symbols to show
topographic details such as relief, drainage, agricultural land, forest, settlements, means
of communication, location of schools, post offices and other services and facilities.
II) Small-scale Maps : Small-scale maps are the maps drawn to show large areas at a relatively
small-scale. These are further divided into the following types :
(a) Wall Maps : These maps are generally drawn on large size paper or on plastic base for
the use in classrooms or lecture hall.
(b) Atlas Maps : Atlas maps are very small-scale maps. These maps represent fairly large
areas and present highly generalised picture of the physical or cultural features.
Based on Function :
I) Physical Maps : Physical maps show natural features such as relief, geology, soils, drainage,
elements of weather, climate and vegetation, etc.
(a) Relief Maps : Relief maps show general topography of an area like mountains and
valleys, plains, plateau and drainage.
(b) Geological Maps : These maps are drawn to show geological structures, rock types, etc.
(c) Climatic Maps : These maps depicts climatic regions of an area. Besides, maps are also
drawn to show the distribution of temperature, rainfall, cloudiness, relative humidity,
direction and velocity of winds and other elements of weather.
(d) Soil Maps : Maps are also drawn to show the distribution of different types of soil(s) and
their properties.
II) Cultural Maps : Cultural maps show man-made features. These include a variety of maps
showing population distribution and growth, sex and age, social and religious composition,
literacy, levels of educational attainment, occupational structure, location of settlements,
facilities and services, etc. Types of cultural maps are :
(a) Political Maps : These maps show the administrative divisions of an area such as
country, state or district. These maps facilitate the administrative machinery in planning
and management of the concerned administrative unit.
(b) Population Maps : These maps show the distribution, density and growth of population,
age and sex composition, linguistic and social groups, occupational structure of the
population, etc.
(c) Economic Maps : These maps depict production and distribution of different types of
crops and minerals, location of industries and markets, routes for trade and flow of
commodities.
(d) Transportation Maps : These maps show roads, railway lines and the location of railway
stations and airports.
