SECTION – A

1. Read the following passage and answer the questions set below it :
A beggar was excited, not because he would see the King that day, but because
he was sure to get something from the generous king. On seeing the King, he
shouted his praises. “Who are you ?” asked the King. “I’m your unfortunate
subject who hasn’t eaten since yesterday !” cried the beggar.
“Have you nothing for your King except a sad story ?” asked the King, putting out
his hand. “Give me something.” The astonished beggar picked up five grains of
rice from his bowl full of rice and laid them on the King’s palm. The King drove
away. The disappointed beggar cursed the King for his miserliness.
That evening the King sent him a bag of rice. He saw a small piece of gold in
it. He emptied the bag, feeling sure that there would be more. There were only

five gold pieces, one for each grain of rice he had given the King. If he had
given the King all the rice, he would have been a rich man.
A) With reference to the passage, do as directed. [2]

2. Read the following passage and complete the tree diagram given below. (Do
not draw the diagram) : [5]
Soil is our prime natural and economic resource. Different types of soils are
found in India and they differ in composition and structure. Black soils are
concentrated in parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu
have laterite soils while alluvial soils are found in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.

Alluvial soils are the largest and the most important soil group of India. Humus,
lime and organic matters are present in alluvial soils which makes them highly
fertile. Wheat and sugarcane are two crops cultivated mainly in this soil. Its
colour is grey and texture is sandy or loamy.
Laterite soil generally lacks fertility and is not suitable for agriculture. But some
laterites are suitable for growing plantation crops like rubber and cashewnuts.
It is coarse in texture and provides valuable building material. It is red due to
high iron oxide content.
Black soil is rich in iron, lime and calcium. It is black in colour and clayey to
touch. It is known as Black Cotton Soil because cotton is the most important
crop grown in this soil. Sunflower is also grown in this soil.

3. Read the following passage and answer the questions set below it :
People think of poverty as a great evil. It seems to be an accepted belief that
if people have plenty of money they will be happy and will get more out of life.
However, there is some genuine satisfaction which is obtained from life in the
humbler cottages of the poor men rather than in the palaces of the rich. I always
pity the sons and daughters of rich men who are attended to by servants. They
do not get to face some of the daily struggles of life. I am sad to think that they

do not know what they have missed, for it is in facing these daily challenges
that strong characters are built.
The home of many a poor man is sometimes free from social envies and
jealousies – how loving and united members are, selflessly working to support
the family. It is for these reasons that so many strong, eminent, self-reliant men
and women have sprung from the ranks of the poor. If you read about the life
of these ‘immortals’ who will never be forgotten, you will find that most of them
have been born poor.
