VIII. Read the following passage carefully and answer the

questions that follow : 1×4=4

36. A hare and a tortoise were friends. Though they were

friends the hare often teased the tortoise, by calling him

the slowest animal on the earth.

One day, the tortoise said, ‘‘You always ridicule me for my

slow pace. But I am confident that I can beat you in a

race.

The hare mocked at him ‘‘Are you joking ? How can a

slow paced animal like you defeat a superfast hare ?’’

However, the tortoise remained adamant. So the race

between the hare and the tortoise was arranged. On the

predestined day, a large number of animals assembled to

witness this unique race. The winning post was fixed in

the deep jungle.

The race started. The tortoise crawled at his slow pace,

whereas the hare ran away at lightning speed. The hare

left the tortoise far behind. He could even see the winning

post from there.

The hare was happy and relaxed. He thought, ‘‘My victory

is certain. Why to make so much haste ?’’ Meanwhile

‘‘I can take rest under a tree.’’ The hare lay under a tree

and soon fell fast asleep.

The tortoise was not disappointed with his slow speed

and kept on crawling steadily. After sometimes, he

surpassed the sleeping hare and reached near the

winning post. When the tortoise was about to reach the

winning post, the hare woke up and saw the tortoise near

the post. The overconfident hare was baffled to see the

tortoise there. He ran with all his might. Alas ! The slow

paced tortoise reached the post before him and won the

race.
