Historians suggest that the classification of people by gotra began around 1000 BCE. Two marriage
rules were particularly crucial . Firstly women were expected to give up their gotra after marriage and
adopt that of their husband. Secondly, marriage between members of the same gotra ,known as sagotra
marriage ,was considered undesirable. These rule emphasized the Importance of kanyadana the religious
duty where a father gives his daughter in marriage. Such rule were especially influential among the elite
families , While other communities did not necessarily adhere to them.

The Non- Cooperation movement , in this present form , is launched to make the government realize that
its control over the lives of the people depend entirely on the good will of the public .We must burn
foreign cloth and promote khadi in its place as khadi is the only solution to end poverty and starvation .
We must abandon Government school and college, so that the government knows we do not accept its
education system. We must renounce all Government titles .This is a movement that does not require any
kind of violence or uproar. And if we remain focused on our aim for one year Swaraj will surely be
attained.
1- According to Gandhi ji , What was the main objective of launching the Non-Cooperation
Movement ?
2- Why did Gandhi ji emphasize the promotion of khadi ?
3- What time frame did Gandhi ji mention for the movements success?
4- How did the above appeal help make the
Non –cooperation Movement a mass movement ?
