SECTION A: READING SKILLS (15 Marks)
Q1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below : (10x1= 10 marks)
Chameleons can change their skin colour, but not because they choose to. The chameleon changes colour to
help it avoid its enemies. It is a form of camouflage, a disguise that allows it to blend in with its
surroundings. The change is actually determined by environmental factors such as light and temperature.
Bright sunlight darkens the skin. On cool nights, the colour fades to a creamy colour. The colour changes
when the chameleon is excited, angry or scared. The colour change is rapid and increases when the
chameleon is handled, injured, or approached by another chameleon. There are many types of chameleons.
Almost half of them are found in the African island of Madagascar. Others occur mostly in the Sahara
desert, with a few in western Asia and southern Europe. Chameleons live in trees, where they usually eat
insects. Very large chameleons can even use their sticky tongues to catch birds.

(i)Because the snake is a very dangerous creature and its fear is generally instilled in
everybody from his very childhood .
(ii) The child’s mother tells him that the kind of the snake that he saw was not so
dangerous. It lived on insects only and did not harm others.

i)The king and the hermit removed the wounded man's clothes and found a large wound on
his stomach. The king used his handkerchief to clean and dress the wound till it stopped
bleeding.

ii) Mr Gessler complained that the big firms didn’t value the money of the customers. They
were capturing the markets from advertisements and not from the quality of their work.

iii) Maya thought that Mr Nath was a crook because he had a strange appearance. He did not
work but always had money to order his meals from restaurants, and even gave tips.

iv) It seems like the talking fan was demanding lubricating oil for its whirling motor so that it

could reduce the friction and help it function smoothly.
v) Children use trees for their games. They make tree houses and play ‘HIDE AND
SEEK’behind the trees. Under the shade of the trees, they have their tea parties and they also
become a befitting subject matter for painting.

i) The new ants are trained for the jobs of workers, cleaners, soldiers, builders etc.
ii) He would try to steal away to stalk a cat or someone's pet .He grew steadily less friendly.
He also started killing the animals in poultry house. Finally, when he began to stalk
Mahmoud about the house with what looked like villainous intent, Grandfather decided to
transfer Timothy to a zoo.
iii)The bear was tied up with a chain at night. He was also tied up on Sundays as his mistress
used to spend the afternoon with her married sister. She did so because she did not think it
was good for him to wander about in the forest with all its temptations.

Q12. 4 Marks : Content: 2 marks Expression & Accuracy : 2 marks

In the meadows, one comes across various beautiful sights. One is able to see butterflies
sipping nectar from the flowers. One encounters a rabbit that suddenly hops in front of you,
one is able to see dandelions transform from buds to flowers and seek the pleasure of seeing
them flutter. Only in the meadows it is possible to see burrows, mounds, nests all placed
nearly in the same area. The feeling of walking through the soft velvet like grass can only be
understood by those who have been to the meadows.

Or
Ans- The lessons one can learn from the story ‘Three Questions’ are in many ways pertinent
in everyday life. One should learn from his personal experience what is essential and what is
non essential. From the experience of the King, it is learnt that there can be no fixed set of
ideas for proper time to begin a work, right people to consult with or the most important work
to undergo. All the activities are completely based on the particular point of time. One should
judge the situation and work accordingly and extend his helping hand to others in case of real
need.
