SECTION A: READING SKILLS
1. Read the following passage carefully and based on your understanding of it answer
the questions
The media has its own strange way of telling us what is acceptable when it comes to
body image. When it is about fashion, people certainly get drawn to certain images in
magazines and television shows and form an idea about how others perceive them. This,
especially, has an impact on teens and young adults, who seem to be the most vulnerable.
They fall easy prey to these body image theories. Since many advertisements target this
market, it becomes important to question whether certain companies and organizations
m
should be allowed to use the media for marketing misleading products which might end
.co
up making someone feel bad about being in their own skin.
e m
las
It is no mean task to find viable examples of how the media can represent a positive body
g
image in front of its audience. The most common culprits are print-advertisements,
a
because they project models in perfect clothes that are too perfect at times. Due to this,
people feel that this is the standard they are supposed to follow. The media can be a great
influencer in letting the public know how to lead a positive lifestyle. But this message
often gets misconstrued in the middle of nowhere.
It is hard for people to determine the detrimental effects media has on us, especially on
women. Some women do not feel comfortable because of the picture painted in front of
them via television or a magazine. It’s tough for them to accept their bodies in a positive
m
light. Most people do not concur with the way movies, music and other popular media
m .co
perceive body images differently. For instance, they usually show slimmer and toned,
.co m
perfect looking bodies. Men are also shown to be more muscular and attractive in most of
m s e
a
these advertisements. These unrealistic concepts focus on building an ideal man or
s e woman, knowing very well that this is far from reality.

Our society faces a dilemma between what is acceptable and what is not. There are not
ag enough messages circulated to emphasize the fact that people are fine just the way they
are. Instead, there is more hullabaloo about looking a certain way to make a lot of money
or to fit in a specific group of people or company. But now, the consumers are becoming
more aware of how their behaviour is impacting their health, lifestyle and the
environment.
i. The products have been labelled ‘misleading’ because- 1
a) they don’t give the right information.
b) such products are harmful for the body.
m .
c) they represent a false perfect picture.
