Tourists to Jammu and Kashmir have another attraction - a floating post office on the Dal
Lake in the first in the country. 'Floating Post Office, Dal Lake's claimed to be the only one
such post office in the world is built on an intricately carved maroon houseboat, fastened on
the western edge of the Dal Lake.
This post office lets you avail of all the regular postal services available in the country while
being afloat. The seal used on everything posted from Floating Post Office is unique along
with the date and address, it bears the design of a boatman rowing a shikara on the Dal
Lake. The special feature of this post office is that letters posted from here carry a special
design which has the picturesque scenery of Dal Lake and Srinagar city. These pictures reach
wherever these letters are posted to and hence promote Kashmir as a tourist destination
across the world.
This is actually a heritage post office that has existed since British times. It was called Nehru
Park Post Office before 2011. But then the chief postmaster John Samuel renamed it as
'Floating Post Office'.

A great part of Arabia is desert. Here there is nothing but sand and rock. The sand is
so hot that you cannot walk over it with your bare feet in the daytime. Here and
there in the desert are springs of water that come from deep down under the
ground- so deep that the sun cannot dry them up. These springs are few and far
apart, but wherever there is one, trees grow tall and graceful, making a cool, green,
shady place around the spring. Such a place is called an oasis.

The Arabs who are not in the cities line in the desert all the year round, they line in
tents that can be put up and taken down very easily and quickly so that they can
move from one oasis to another, seeking grass and water for their sheep, goats,
camels and horses. These desert Arabs eat ripe, sweet figs, and also the dates that
grow upon the palm trees, they dry them too and use them as food all the year
round.

These Arabs have the finest horses in the world. An Arab is very proud of his riding
horse and loves him almost as much as he loves his wife and children. He never puts
heavy loads upon his horse and often lets him stay in the tent with his family.

The camel is much more useful to the Arab than his beautiful horse, however for he
is much larger and stronger. One camel can carry as much as or more than two
horses. The Arab loads the camel with goods and rides him too for miles and miles
across the desert - just as if he were really the "Ship of the Desert" which he is often
called.

SECTION – A

Read the following passage and answer any five questions from 1-7. 2x5=10

India is one of the former colonies of the world that has progressed so far as to become the
second-fastest growing economy in the world, along with being projected as a future
superpower. Socially, however, India‟s progress has not been as steep and stark. Its society
continues to remain in the tight grip of patriarchy and caste- two dominant features that continue
to determine how far one can go socially, economically and politically. However, unlike
patriarchy that is finally being challenged, caste still remains that dirty laundry in modern India
which no one likes to acknowledge publicly.

Through a Video Volunteers survey conducted by its Community Correspondents with 490
people from the SC/ST community in nine states, it was recorded that 64% of the respondents
have experienced discrimination of atrocities in some form. The survey confirms that there is no
space for us to assume that untouchability and other discriminatory practices ended when the
Constitution abolished it as a practice in 1950 through Article 17.In order to actualise the
intention of the law, it is necessary for law enforcement and social sensitisation to work
concurrently.

The survey was rolled out to relay to a wider audience that caste-hierarchy and discrimination
continue to fuel inequality in Indian society. When the SC/ST Act was enacted and amended, it

was done in order to slowly eliminate the roadblocks placed in front of the communities to
support them in leading an equal and dignified life as citizens of India.

The survey on caste-based discrimination and atrocities also reveal that only 21% of those who
had faced some form of discrimination filed a report with the police. This doesn‟t come as a
shocking revelation because raising one‟s voice corresponds to vulnerability to social boycott,
physical violence, or losing one‟s source of income. The top-tier position in most organisations
are held by „upper-caste‟ men, which can place people from „lower-castes‟ and women in a
disempowered position.
