Q1 ‘Have you come back?’ said the woman. ‘I thought that no one had come back.’ Does this
statement give some clue about the story? If yes, what is it?
Answer. This statement was uttered by Mrs. Dorling when the narrator visited her in Holland.
The statement shows that the lady knew the narrator since old times.
The girl had visited Mrs. Dorling to take back her mother's possessions which they abandoned
years before, while a war was going on. Now , since the war was over and everything seemed
normal , she decided to visit Mrs. Dorling's home to get back the things she had various
childhood memories linked with.
Q2 The story is divided into pre-War and post-War times. What hardships do you think the girl
underwent during these times?
Answer. The story encompasses the division of period into Pre-War and Post-War with
instances of difference in the lifestyle of a jew family.
There were many hardships faced by the girl throughout her life. Firstly under the rage of the
war , she had to abandon her home, her precious possessions and take refuge to a new place
which was unlikely to serve her happiness like her own home did. She had to sacrifice the
beauty of her childhood by witnessing the cruel reality and bloodshed of the war. Secondly, after
the war, when she even lost her mother and wanted back her abandoned possessions from
Mrs. Dorling, her visit to her home completely shattered her by watching those precious
belongings arranged in a tasteless manner. It completely shunned her wish to have those things
back as she realised she wasn't able to connect to them anymore and it only instilled pain in her
heart by remembering those wartime moments.
