Q1 This play, written in the 1950s, is a humorous and satirical depiction of the status of the
mother in the family.

(i) What are the issues it raises?

(ii) Do you think it caricatures these issues or do you think that the problems it

raises are genuine? How does the play resolve the issues? Do you agree with the
resolution?

Answer.

i) The issue raised in the play illuminates the condition of a house-wife, who is just a
caretaker and a maid to her family. The character of Mrs Annie Pearson depicts the
condition of many houses wives out there who are thought to be the least working member
of the family and are taken for granted by the rest of the family members.

ii) The problems raised in the play are absolutely genuine. The play is attributed to the
1950s, but the problem is still relevant in today's society where a housewife is taken for
granted and her existence is only limited to serve her family with the best she could without
paying getting the respect she deserves.

The play resolves the issue by means of magic. Mrs Fitzerald and Mrs Annie Pearson
interchange their souls by use of a spell , so that Mrs Fitzerald can teach a good lesson to
Mrs Pearson's family. She stops serving Mrs Pearson's family by making them realise how
rude and thankless her family was towards their homemaker i.e. Mrs Pearson.

Yes, I agree with the resolution.
