Q1

(i) Contrast the Chinese view of art with the European view with examples.

(ii) Explain the concept of shanshui.

Answer.

(i) Chinese view of art differs a lot from European view of art. European art lay emphasis on
illusionistic features in a painting, the more real, the better art. Bringing a life into a painting is
what an artist's main motive is. On the other hand, Chinese art deals with features that cover
intricate details of philosophy which depicts inner life, it is completely beyond the materialism of
the world. An artist here, not just present his work before the audience but want them to
understand and relate with the painting mentally and physically.

The painting of a 'landscape' by Wu Daozi and the painting of a 'housefly' by the blacksmith,
presents a great difference between these two splendid art styles.

(ii) Shanshui is the terminology for the Chinese Philosophy. It's a holy concept consisting of
'Yang-Yin' theory which means 'mountain water' (Yang means mountain , which represents the
male element and Yin means water, the female element). It is a major element in the classical
Chinese paintings. It's a spiritual touch without which Chinese paintings would be non-existing.

Answer.

(i) The terms 'Art Brut' , 'Outsider Art' , and 'Raw Art' are mentioned in the article 'Getting Inside
"Outsiders Art" ' by Brinda Suri. These terms are meant for those people who don't have a right
to be called a professional artist and had never received a formal training yet have an artistic
insight, and create their own art which is entirely different from that of their predecessors.

(ii) 'Nek Chand' an 80 year old creator and director of the Rock Garden in Chandigarh has been
called as the "untutored genius who created a paradise".

His contribution in the field of art has been commendable not only as a masterpiece but also as
an eco friendly artefact which is made of recycled products.

Q1 “The Emperor may rule over the territory he has conquered, but only the artist knows the
way within.”

Answer. This sentence solely acknowledges an artist who is beyond the materialism of the
world. An Emperor may conquer many territories and rule over them which is a mere part of the
materialistic world, but an artist is beyond that materialism. He believes in inner life, puts
spirituality before the physicality and is more uplifted as a living being than those caught in the
lurements of the world.

Q2 “The landscape is an inner one, a spiritual and conceptual space.”

Answer. This statement describes the Chinese art form where inner peace , spirituality and
conceptual space are the key elements. In a painting of a landscape, a viewer can enter it
through any path. One needs to connect to it mentally as well as physically to reach the ecstasy
of viewing it. It has a deeper meaning of human beings, being the 'eye of the landscape' and
resides in the conceptual space where mountain water interact (the middle void).
