There are 30 questions in all in this Section.
All questions are compulsory.
Prose Passage I ( Q. Nos. 31 to 37)
Global warming is defined as the increase of the average temperature on earth. This
increase in the earth's temperature is the cause of natural disasters which are
becoming increasingly frequent all over the world. Carbon dioxide, produced by the
use of chemicals and the burning of fuels, is the main cause of glob<V warming. High
levels of carbon dioxide trap heat in the atmosphere. This can have serious
consequences for the climate of a region.
GJobal warming can cause many natural disasters. Prolonged and widespread
droughts, heavy floods, very severe storms and melting- of glaciers are just some of
them. There will be more hurricances and cyclones in many parts of the world. It
seems that the world is totally unprepared to meet the crisis. Countries should get
together to find ways to check global warming. Vehicles, buildings, appliances. etc.

Prose ( Q~ Nos. 61 to 65 )
Many thousands of years ago all men did all types of work. Each man built his own
house and made what furniture he needed arid grew all his own food. His wife made
all the clothes for the family and cooked food.
However, men very soon found that it was much better to divide the work among
them, so that one built houses, another made furniture, and anoth'er grew corn, and
so on. You can easily see thatthis was a better plan, because by always doing the
same kind of work, you can do it far. more quickly and easily. So nowadays all work ·is
divided as much as possible. Even such a tiny thing as a pin is not made by one man,
but by a dozen or more, each doing his particular bit of the work. One straightens out
the wire, another cuts it into lengths, another sharpens the point. another puts the
head on, and so forth. That is to say, work is divided among different people.

Poem ( Q. Nos. 66_ to 70 )
The squirrel gloats o'er his accomplished hoard.
The ants have brimmed their garners with ripe grain,
And honey-bees have stored
The sweets of summer i~ their luscious cells ;
The swallows all have winged across the main ;
But here the Autumn melancholy dwells,
And sighs her tearful spells
Amongst the sunless shadows of the plain.
Alone, alone,
Upon a mossy stone
She sits and reckons up the dead and gone, '
With the last leaves for a love-rosary ;
'Whilst all the withered world looks drearily,
Like a dim picture of the drowned past
In the hushed mind's mysterious far-away,
Doubtful what ghostly thing will steal the last
Into that distance, grey upon tQe grey.
