America.

Answer. The native people of North America lived in bands, in villages along river valleys. They
ate fish and meat. They cultivated vegetables and maize.

The native people of South America practiced extensive agriculture. They developed Kingdoms
and empires in South America.

Q2 Other than the use of English, what other features of English economic and social life do you
notice in nineteenth-century USA?

Answer. The features of English economic and social life we notice are :

→ The landscapes of America changed drastically.

→ The Europeans treated the land differently from the natives.

→They cleared the land and developed agriculture, introducing crops like rice and cotton, which
cannot be grown in Europe.

→ There were immigrants from countries like Germany, Sweden and Italy.

→ Wild animals like wolves and mountain lions were hunted to extinction in order to protect the
huge farms.

Q3 What did the 'frontier' mean to be Americans?

Answer. The countries known as Canada and the USA came into existence at the end of the
eighteenth century. Over the next hundred years they extended their control over more territory,
to reach their present sizes. Large areas were acquired by the USA by purchase. The
boundaries of the USA kept shifting, these boundaries were known as frontiers.

Q4 Why was the history of the Australian native people left out of history books?

Answer. The History of the Australian native people was left out because the History was written
by Europeans settlers. They at times were partial and also considered that Australia belonged to
nobody.

Q5 How satisfactory is a museum gallery display in explaining the culture of a people? Give
examples of your own experience of a museum.

Answer. A museum gallery displays various things that explains the culture of people.

The things that are displayed are artefacts, writings, scriptures, arts, paintings, ornaments and
jewellery, tools, sculptures, pottery, utensils, dresses, etc.
