attempted followed by MCQs, comprehension questions,
providing suitable title to the passage, one-word

Smith was a ten-year-old school girl; her sister was seven years
old. Their parents were Penny and Colin Smith. It was 26
December 2004. Deadly tsunami waves were already on their
way. They had been triggered by a massive earthquake off
northern Sumatra earlier that morning. “The water was swelling
and kept coming in,” Penny Smith remembered. “The beach was
getting smaller and smaller. I didn’t know what was happening.”
But Tilly Smith sensed that something was wrong. Her mind kept
going back to a geography lesson she had taken in England just
two weeks before she flew out to Thailand with her family to
celebrate Christmas. Tilly saw the sea slowly rise, and start to
foam, bubble and form whirlpools. She remembered that she
had seen this in class in a video of a tsunami that had hit the
Hawaiian Islands in 1946. Her geography teacher had shown her
class the video, and told them that tsunamis can be caused by
earthquakes, volcanoes and landslides. Tilly started to scream at
her family to get off the beach. “She talked about an earthquake

under the sea. She got more and more hysterical,” said her
mother, Penny. “I didn’t know what a tsunami was. But seeing
my daughter so frightened, I thought something serious must
be going on.” Tilly’s parents took her and her sister away from
the beach, to the swimming pool at the hotel. A number of other
tourists also left the beach with them. “Then it was as if the
entire sea had come out after them. I was screaming, ‘Run!’”
The family took refuge in the third floor of the hotel.

punctuation and the appropriate spelling.

All living things needs water in order to survive. The few plants
and animals that live in deserts has developed the ability to
require less water than most plants and animals. The camel,
popularly known as the ‘ship of the dasert’, can drink a lot of
water at one time? Camels can do without water for days
together. The reason is they sweet very little. We sweat because
we must keep our body temperature constant. We sweat when
it gets hot, and this cools the body. Camels can stand high body
temperature. They don’t need to sweat and can, therefore, retain
a water they drink for long periods of time.

The next day your school has a football match with a
neighbouring school but the authorities suddenly announce
summer vacation. So the match gets automatically postponed
till the reopening of the schools after the summer vacation.
You are the captain of the school football team, so you are
asked to inform all the players about the postponement of the
match. Now write a text message to all the players.

Write an e-mail on the given situation in not more than 50 words.
You have been selected for a national art exhibition which is
going to be held in New Delhi in the coming month. The
organising body of the exhibition wants your consent to be a
participant in the said exhibition. Now write an e-mail to the
organisers either in acceptance or refusal and send it to the
given e-mail ID: [email protected].

9) Write a letter on any one of the two given situations.
3 Marks
You are a student of Govt. Middle School Jammu. Your school
does not have a science teacher. You and all your classmates
are facing so much difficulty learning science through proper
and practical learning. Write a letter to the HOI of your school
requesting her/him to arrange a science teacher for your class
so that you will study the said subject better. You can also
highlight the benefits of studying science with a science
teacher to support your demand.

Or

Your class is going for an education trip. Your class teacher
tells you to seek the permission of your parent/guardian, who
is out of home on his business trip and is expected to return
after the trip date. Now you decide to communicate him/her
through a letter. Write a letter to him/her asking for the grant
of permission for the said education trip and also request him
to send a written document of grant of permission which you
will submit to your school.

10) Write a report on any one of the following given situations.

Your school organised a seminar on ‘Say No to Drugs and Yes
to Life’, in which all the teachers, students, parents and
community members took part and some famous personality
of your area was the chief guest on the event. Many students
and community members delivered speeches. The three best

speeches were given prizes and achievement certificates.
Now being student secretary, you are asked to write a report
on the said seminar to be published in the print media and
uploaded on social media.

While going to school, you came across an accident in which
a scooty collided with a car. Both the vehicles were partially
damaged. The scooty rider was seriously injured but the car
driver had received no injury at all. The injured was rushed
to nearby hospital and a case of the accident was registered
by the concerned police. You want to present the news of the
said accident on the morning assembly. Now write the news
report by following all the steps of a news reporting.
