Food without salt is tasteless. So after a lengthy discussion, Peter, being the
youngest of the group, was chosen to fetch the salt from home.
Although Peter was fit and could make the trip back home without much
difficulty, he whined and cried. Finally, he agreed to go on one condition that
no one would eat anything until he returned. The family consented and the
little boy left.
Three hours passed and Peter had not returned One.........two hours.......then,
in the third hour of his absence, grandfather could no longer contain his hunger.

2. Read the following passage and complete the tree diagram given below :
The word literature is really hard to define. Some opine that literature is
the mirror of life; others say that it is the criticism of life. Whatever may
be the controversy about the word, we may say that literature is that which
reflects life.
The five categories of literature that students should be familiar with are
Poetry, Drama, Prose, Nonfiction, and Media. Poetry is of two kinds, imagi-
native and realistic. Drama is either a comedy or a tragedy. Some of the widely
read books of Shakespearean comedy are ‘‘As You Like It’ and ‘The Comedy
Page 4
of Errors’. Hamlet, Macbeth and Othello are tragedies that have captured
the hearts of millions.
Prose can be divided into novels and short stories. Novels are also of many
kinds–such as historical, psychological, scientific, etc. Nonfiction literature refers
to a variety of texts that strive to depict information that is 100 percent factually
accurate. The newest type of literature is media. It includes the many important
kinds of texts such as websites and commercials.
3. Read the following passage and answer the questions set below it :
There is always a debate on whether children should lend a hand around
the house or not. Those who support the idea of children doing chores say
that it teaches them a great deal. Others say they should not be made to
do work as childhood is short and should be full of fun.
Page 5
Parents may be reluctant to make their children do chores; after all, children
are so busy with all their school work that they don’t want to add to the
pressures. Doing chores may not be an enjoyable activity, but chores have
to be divided amongst all the household members. Instead of arguing over
responsibilities or leaving it all to one person, how about doing chores together
as a family ?
Turning chores into a family activity will help children nurture familial
relationships. It makes children more confident and independent. It will help
them learn how to be responsible in later life. Children who do chores become
conscious of the mess they leave around, and will willingly do the work involved.
