Q1 In a reaction, 5.3 g of sodium carbonate reacted with 6 g of acetic acid. The products were 2.2 g
of carbon dioxide, 0.9 g water and 8.2 g of sodium acetate. Show that these observations are in
agreement with the law of conservation of mass.
sodium carbonate + acetic acid → sodium acetate + carbon dioxide + water

Answer. In the given reaction, sodium carbonate reacts with ethanoic acid to produce sodium
ethanoate, carbon dioxide, and water.

Q2 Hydrogen and oxygen combine in the ratio of 1:8 by mass to form water. What mass of oxygen
gas would be required to react completely with 3 g of hydrogen gas?

Answer. It is given that the ratio of hydrogen and oxygen by mass to form water is 1:8. Then, the
mass of oxygen gas required to react completely with 1 g of hydrogen gas is 8 g. Therefore, the
mass of oxygen gas required to react completely with 3 g of hydrogen gas is 8 x 3 g = 24 g.

Q3 What is meant by the term chemical formula?

Answer. The chemical formula of a compound means the symbolic representation of the
composition of a compound. From the chemical formula of a compound, we can know the number
and kinds of atoms of different elements that constitute the compound. For example, from the
chemical formula C02 of carbon dioxide, we come to know that one carbon atom and two oxygen
atoms are chemically bonded together to form one molecule of the compound, carbon dioxide.

Q1 If one mole of carbon atoms weighs 12 grams, what is the mass (in grams) of 1 atom of carbon?

Answer. One mole of carbon atoms weighs 12 g (Given)
i.e., mass of I mole of carbon atoms = 12 g
Then, mass of 6.022 × 10 number of carbon atoms = 12
23

Therefore, mass of I atom of carbon g
12
23
6.022×10

=1.9926 × 10 −21
g

Q2 Which has more number of atoms, 100 grams of sodium or 100 grams of iron (given, atomic
mass of Na = 23 u, Fe = 56 u)?

Answer. Atomic mass of Na = 23 u (Given)
Then, gram atomic mass of Na = 23 g
Now, 23 g of Na contains =6.022 × 10 number of atoms
23

23

Thus, 100 g of Na contains =
6.022×10
× 100
23

number of atoms= 2.6182 × 10 number of atoms,
24

Again, atomic mass of Fe = 56 u(Given)
Then, gram atomic mass of Fe = 56 g
23

Now, 56 g of Fe contains = number of atoms
6.022×10
× 100
56

Thus, 100 g of Fe contains =1.0753 × 10 numberof atoms
24

Therefore, 100 grams of sodium contain more number of atoms than 100 grams of
iron.

Q1 A 0.24 g sample of compound of oxygen and boron was found by analysis to contain 0.096 g of
boron and 0.144 g of oxygen. Calculate the percentage composition of the compound by weight.

Answer. Mass of boron= 0.096 g (Given)
Mass of oxygen = 0.144 (Given)
Mass of sample = 0.24 g (Given)
Thus, percentage of boron by weight in the compound = 0.096

0.24
× 100

=40 %
And, percentage of oxygen by weight in the compound =
0.144
× 100
0.24

=60%

Page 7

Book : Science Ncert Solutions | Chapter-3 Science

mass of carbon dioxide will be formed when 3.00 g of carbon is burnt in 50.00 g of oxygen? Which
law of chemical combination will govern your answer?

Answer. Carbon + Carbon ->dioxide
3 g of carbon reacts with 8 g of oxygen to produce 11 g of carbon dioxide.
If 3 g of carbon is burnt In SO g of oxygen, then 3 g of carbon will react with 8 g of
oxygen. The remaining 42 g of oxygen will be left un-reactive.
In this case also, only 11 g of carbon dioxide will be formed.
The above answer is governed by the law of constant proportions.
