SECTION A (READING)
1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions.
He sat a few furlongs away from the teashop, just where the footpath takes a bend. A spot where no one
could miss him as they walked by. To anyone who did pass by, ignoring him, he would tap his brush and
shout ‘Polish, sir?’
He was always sipping his tea. His eyes were always glued to the feet of those who passed by, summing
them up.
Shining shoes, slippers or dirty ones, whoever walked past would be greeted by his ‘Polish, sir!’
I spotted him on my first day to office. I had to pass him from the bus stop. I had brand new shoes on.
Getting down from the bus I had managed to keep the shoes shining bright. As walked past, lost in my
thoughts, I was startled by his ‘Polish, sir!’
Ever since that day, I made sure my shoes -if not shining bright – were in good condition.
When the monsoons came, he would add some broken umbrellas to his kit and move in to the shelter of a
shop if it rained. His eyes however, would always be glued to footwear.
His reputation was not very good. ‘He charges too much. And he is far too rude,’ my friend once told me,
though he grudgingly admitted that he was ‘good at his job’.
‘Someday,’ I told myself, ‘I will get him to do my shoes.’ And all through I enjoyed passing by him
playing my little game of ‘I don’t need you.’ I wondered at times if he caught on to my game or if I was
just another pair of feet passing by.
