A) Design an experiment to demonstrate Osmosis
A) Càస ణ z ఒ â Ô 9.
Answer: Aim: Show that water moves through a semi-permeable membrane (potato cells)
from dilute to concentrated solution.
Materials: 2 clear glasses, water, salt (4-5 teaspoons), 2 equal potato strips, labels, tissue
papers, ruler.
Procedure: 1. Label glasses A = Water and B = Salt water (mix salt into water until it tastes
salty). 2. Put one potato strip in each glass; make sure they are fully covered. 3. Leave for
40-60 minutes. 4. Take out, blot dry, and compare feel (firm/soft) and measure length if
possible.
Observations: A (Water, hypotonic) - potato becomes firm and a little longer/heavier, it
swells. B (Salt water, hypertonic) - potato becomes soft/floppy and may shrink, it loses
water.
Conclusion: Water moved into the potato cells in pure water and out of the potato cells in
salt water through their membranes. This one-way movement of water across a semi-
permeable membrane is osmosis.
