Long ago, a baby girl was born to Queen Ahmose,
the wife of Pharaoh Tuthmosis I. The Pharaoh was
the supreme ruler of ancient Eygpt, which was a
powerful and wealthy empire. Queen Ahmose
named her daughter Hatshepsut, a name that
meant “the foremost of noble ladies.”

Young Hatshepsut lived in a palace and had many
servants to care for her. During the day she played
with her dolls and sometimes visited her father’s
zoo. As she grew older her father died. Hatshepsut
married but her husband died within few years and
she became Eygpt’s pharaoh. Because it was
unusual for a woman to become king, she was
shown in wall paintings and carvings wearing a
false beard and men’s clothing.

There was a time when all house-work was done
by the women or girls of the household. Few

work in middle and upper class homes for very
moderate wages. Such girls nowadays work in
factories. They earn more money than most
householders can afford to pay. Thus, the wife now
does the the household work herself with the aid
of labour-saving machines ; and she expects some
help from her husband.
