1. Read the passage and answer the following questions at the end.
Coronaviruses were discovered in the 1960s. They are a group of viruses that cause diseases
in mammals and birds. In humans, coronaviruses cause respiratory tract infections that are
typically mild, such as the common cold. The name "coronavirus" is derived from the
Latin corona, meaning crown or halo. The name refers to the characteristic appearance of the
infective form of the virus, which is reminiscent of a crown or a solar corona.
At the end of 2019, a new type of coronavirus started spreading in China. This type of
coronavirus is often called 2019-nCoV, novel coronavirus, or COVID-19. It is believed that
the virus was transmitted from animals to humans. Some of the first cases were diagnosed in
people who had visited a market selling live seafood and animals. Unfortunately, when
viruses are transmitted from animals to people, it can take scientists a lot of time before they
can develop a vaccine or medicines to cure it.
Some of the symptoms of the coronavirus are fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat,
headache, and trouble breathing. These symptoms are very much like those people have with
a cold or the flu. The virus can be more serious in some people, especially if they are sick or
have health problems such as diabetes, heart diseases and terminal illnesses.
While it is early to have a definite picture of the disease because scientists are still collecting
the data, some patterns have already emerged. Some early reports reveal that children seem
to be getting coronavirus at much lower rates than adults. Even if they get infected, the
symptoms are milder. However, most people who get severely infected are those with a weak
immune system, like the elderly. Coronavirus may be life-threatening for these people. They
may develop more serious respiratory tract illnesses that may be fatal.
The virus appears to spread mainly from person to person. The transmission occurs when
someone comes into contact with an infected person. For example, a cough, sneeze or
handshake could cause transmission. The spread may also be caused by coming into contact
with something an infected person has touched and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes.

3. Read the passage given below.
Democracy, freedom, love— we hear these words so often that we feel we can almost touch
them. These words stand for values everyone holds. They are ideas about what is good or
desirable in the world; ideas that we think about and try to follow.
Values are of two general kinds. Some values refer to what are known as ‘end states’. These
values are conditions in our own lives or in the entire world that we hope will come about.
Other values have to do with the way people should behave. Examples of these are honesty,
kindness and sharing. But these are only words. What makes these words into values for you is
that you believe they stand for a good way for people to behave and make for good conditions
for people to live under.
Some values are personal. Personal values are those that are important in one’s lives. No two
people are exactly alike, nor are their values. One person may value quiet activities such as
reading, watching television or talking to friends. Another person may have more active pastimes
such as bicycling, playing basketball, or swimming. Many people value both quiet activities and
active ones, each kind at a different time.
Then there are societal values. A society’s values are those held by nearly every person in that
group. The values are found in the basic documents of the country such as its laws and

constitution. There are many social values. An example is equality. Others are hard work,
freedom, good education.
When we are very young we look at our parents, teachers, relatives and religious leaders to point
out values to us. When we grow up we decide for ourselves. In the end we have to make up our
minds about the values that are part of our lives.
A difficult problem can arise when two of our values conflict with each other. For example, we
believe in “respecting one’s parents.” On the other hand, we may believe in never breaking a
trust. What if a brother or a sister told you they have disobeyed a parent?

9. Read the given passage. The verbs used in it are mostly in active voice telling us ‘what
they have done’. We could instead render it in passive voice to tell ‘what was done’. One
has been done as an example.

They have restructured the education system here including the outdated approach to teaching-
learning. They have modernized the curriculum. They have upgraded the school up to senior
secondary level. They have introduced subjects like modern science and technology and
computer science, environment conservation, mass communication. They have set up state-of-

arts and handicrafts of the local inhabitants are still taught to the students.
