B) Write the activity you did in your laboratory to show the effect of saliva on starch. g

 6 O J < ల! J Š W
Answer (A):
Aim: To show that carbon dioxide is essential for photosynthesis.
Material: Two potted plants, potassium hydroxide, vaseline.
Procedure:
1. Take two healthy potted plants which are nearly of the same size.
2. Keep them in a dark room for three days.
3. Now place each plant on a separate glass plate. Place a watch-glass containing potassium hydroxide
by the side of one of the plants.
m
m .co
4. The potassium hydroxide absorbs carbon dioxide. Cover both plants with separate bell-jars as shown
in the figure. Use vaseline to seal the bottom of the jars to the glass plates so that the set-up is air-tight.

s e
Keep the plants in sunlight for about two hours, then pluck a leaf from each plant and check for the
presence of starch.

ag

s em g la
g la a
a Observation:
(i) The leaf from (a) shows absence of starch, as the CO2 produced by respiration is absorbed by KOH
and so there is no photosynthesis.
(ii) The leaf from (b) shows presence of enough starch.
Conclusion: We can conclude from this activity that carbon dioxide is necessary to carry out
photosynthesis at the proper rate. That is why plants take in CO2 from the atmosphere during the
day. This shows that carbon dioxide is essential for photosynthesis.
