CASE: A (2 marks)
Read the following passage and answer the questions given below.
Education is considered as one of the basic rights and needs, by the countries the world over.
As a result, the national policy of all countries lists ‘making citizens literate’ as one of its
aims. However, the purpose of education is far greater than being limited to literacy. Literacy
is more than just the ability to read and write is just one of the aspects of education.
Education is the most important element for growth and prosperity of a nation. A country
cannot progress without educating its masses.
Based on the statement answer the following questions :
1. Mention the one aim found in the national policy of all countries?
2. State the most important element of education?
3. What is literacy?

An important aspect of most sociology courses today includes opportunities for students to
acquire a sociological imagination. Nearly fifty years ago, C Wright Mills (1959) wrote about
the ability to see the connections between the wider society and the individuals. Acquiring a
sociological imagination helps students to begin to see these connections. This perspective is
important in providing the intellectual foundation for good citizenship in a democracy and
civic engagement. If students understand why and toward what end their behaviour matters,
they will be more likely to remain proactive, critically empowered members of their societies.

Case 2 ( 2 marks)
The first perspective which added the social dimension to the explanation of learning was of
Albert Bandura. Bandura challenged the behavioural view of learning is correct but
incomplete, Behavioural theories overlooked the role of social factors in learning. In
behavioural theory, reinforcement and punishment directly affects behaviour. In social
learning theory, seeing another person, a model, reinforced or punished, can have similar
effects on the person’s behaviour. Observation can be an efficient process of learning.

Goal is what an individual strives to accomplish. Goals are specific targets. Goal setting is

likely to be distracted. The types of goals we set influence our motivation to reach them. For
most of us, short term goals enhance our motivation, as also specific and moderately difficult
goals. There can be different kinds of goals in school. Goal orientation includes the reason we
pursue goals.
