Dharavi

Only one main road passes through Dharavi, which has been reduced to less than half of its
width. Some of the lanes and footpaths are so narrow that it is difficult for even a bicycle to pass
through them. In the entire settlement there are buildings of temporary construction, which are
two to three storeys high and the iron stairs attached to them go up where the whole family lives
by renting a single room. Sometimes 10-12 people can be seen living in a room here. It is, in a
way, like Victoria's earnest follow-up to the industrial units in the East End of London.

But Dharavi is the custodian of very depressing secrets, its role in the making of a
relatively affluent Mumbai. There are shady places, tree-less sunshine, uncollected garbage,
stagnant puddles of dirty water, where only animals like black crows and long brown rats along
with some of the most beautiful colours and valuable and useful items made in India are made.
Earthenware, ceramics, pottery, embroidery and zari work, refined leather work, high fashion,
textiles, fine wrought metal work, exquisite jewellery sets, wood carving and furniture from
Dharavi reach homes across India and the world.
