India is a land of great diversity. From the snowy mountains of Himachal Pradesh to the sunny beaches of

Kerala, every state in India has something special to offer. The country is known for its rich culture,
languages, traditional clothing, and delicious food. While people in Punjab celebrate Baisakhi with dancing
and music, those in West Bengal enjoy Durga Puja with colorful decorations and grand processions.(para 1)
In Rajasthan, the forts and palaces tell stories of brave kings and queens, while in Tamil Nadu, ancient
temples show the beauty of South Indian art and architecture. Each state also has its own language. Hindi is
the most widely spoken language, but many people also speak Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, and many
others. Indian festivals are another reflection of the country’s unity in diversity. Diwali, the festival of lights,
is celebrated all over the country. Eid, Christmas, Pongal, Onam, and Holi are also celebrated with great joy

Q2. Read the following passage carefully: (1x12=12m)

The city of Mumbai, India, faced a severe waste management crisis in 2018. The city’s sole dumping
ground, Deonar, had reached its maximum capacity and waste was spilling onto the streets. The situation
was exacerbated by the fact that Mumbai generated 7000 metric tons of waste daily with only 20% being
segregated at source. The municipal corporation, Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMO, was under
pressure to find a solution. In 2019 the BMC launched an ambitious waste management project,“Zero Waste
Mumbai”. The project aimed to segregate 100% of the city’s waste at source and compost 80% of the
organic waste. (para 1)

To achieve this goal the BMC implemented several initiatives. Firstly, it introduced a door-to-door waste
collection system, where waste was collected from households and segregated into organic and inorganic
categories. Secondly the BMC set up decentralized composting plants across the city to process organic
waste. Finally the BMC launched a massive awareness campaign to educate citizens about the importance of
waste segregation. (para 2)

The results were impressive. Within a year, the city saw a significant reduction in waste sent to landfills. The
decentralized composting plants processed over 50% of the city's organic waste producing high-quality
compost. The success of the project inspired other Indian cities to adopt similar waste management
strategies. (para 3)

However, challenges still remain The BMC faces resistance from some residents who are unwilling to
segregate waste Additionally the city’s informal waste pickers, who rely on waste collection for their
livelihood, are struggling to adapt to the new system. (para4)
