1. (B) F = MLT⁻², so M = F L⁻¹ T².
2. (C) V = πr²l, so ΔV/V = 2(Δr/r) + Δl/l = 2(2%) + 1% = 5%.
3. (C) With u = 0, the distance in the nth second is a(2n − 1)/2, which is proportional to (2n − 1). For n = 2 and 4 this
gives 3 : 7.
4. (D) At the top only the horizontal component u cos θ remains. u cos θ = u/2 gives cos θ = 1/2, so θ = 60°.
5. (D) For no friction, tan θ = v²/(rg), so v = √(rg tan θ) = √(90 × 10 × 1) = 30 m/s.
6. (D) The acceleration is downward (2.5 m/s²), so N = m(g − a) = 50 × 7.5 = 375 N.
7. (A) Limiting friction = 0.5 × 40 = 20 N, which is more than 15 N, so the block does not move. Static friction just
balances the applied force: 15 N.
8. (C) W = ∫ F dx = ∫₁² 3x² dx = [x³]₁² = 8 − 1 = 7 J.
9. (A) For a head-on elastic collision with the target at rest, fraction transferred = 4m₁m₂/(m₁ + m₂)² = 4(m)(2m)/(3m)² =
8/9.
10. (C) Ring: ½mv² + ½(mr²)(v/r)² = mv². Disc: ½mv² + ½(½mr²)(v/r)² = ¾mv². Ratio = 1 : 3/4 = 4 : 3.
11. (B) τ = r × F = (1 × 3 − 1 × 2) k̂ = +1 k̂ N m.
12. (A) g(d) = g(1 − d/R). 0.75g = g(1 − d/R) gives d = R/4 = 1600 km.
13. (B) Energy per unit volume = ½ × stress × strain = ½ × S × (S/Y) = S²/(2Y).
14. (A) Volume is conserved: 8 × (4/3)πr³ = (4/3)πR³, so R = 2r. Terminal velocity ∝ r², so it becomes 4v.
15. (D) v(max) = Aω = 4 × 2π = 8π cm/s.
16. (A) f = (1/2L)√(T/μ). Four times the tension doubles √T; twice the length halves 1/L. The frequency stays f.
ₚ ₚ
17. (C) ΔU/Q = nCᵥΔT/(nC ΔT) = Cᵥ/C = (3R/2)/(5R/2) = 3/5.
18. (B) PVᵞ = constant, so P₂/P₁ = (V₁/V₂)ᵞ = 8^(5/3) = 2⁵ = 32.
19. (A) By Wien's law λ(m)T is constant: λ = 1.45 × 2000/2900 = 1.0 μm.
20. (C) In series the thermal resistances add: 2L/(KA) = L/(K₁A) + L/(K₂A), so K = 2K₁K₂/(K₁ + K₂).
21. (A) C' = ε₀A/[(d/2) + (d/2K)] = (ε₀A/d) × 2K/(K + 1) = 2KC/(K + 1).
22. (D) Eight such cubes around the corner would enclose the charge completely, so one cube receives 1/8 of the flux
q/ε₀.

23. (C) Power to the load is maximum when R = r = 2 Ω: I = 12/4 = 3 A and P = I²R = 9 × 2 = 18 W (= E²/4r).
24. (B) The two arcs are 3 Ω and 9 Ω in parallel: (3 × 9)/(3 + 9) = 27/12 = 2.25 Ω.
25. (A) Heat needed H = V²t/R, so t ∝ R. In parallel R = R₁R₂/(R₁ + R₂), so t = t₁t₂/(t₁ + t₂) = 150/25 = 6 minutes.
26. (A) qV = ½mv² gives mv = √(2mqV). r = mv/(qB) = √(2mqV)/(qB) = (1/B)√(2mV/q).
27. (B) Shunt S = I(g)G/(I − I(g)) = (0.002 × 50)/1.998 ≈ 0.05 Ω, connected in parallel with the galvanometer.
28. (B) U = ½LI² = ½ × 0.2 × 9 = 0.9 J.
29. (D) V = √[V(R)² + (V(L) − V(C))²] = √(50² + 0²) = 50 V. At resonance V(L) and V(C) cancel.
30. (B) 1/f ∝ (μ(lens)/μ(medium) − 1). In air this is 0.5; in water it is 1.5/(4/3) − 1 = 0.125. So f(water) = 20 × 0.5/0.125 =
80 cm.
31. (C) With f = +15 cm and u = −10 cm: 1/v = 1/15 + 1/10 = 1/6, so v = +6 cm (behind, virtual). m = −v/u = 0.6, so the
image is erect and 1.2 cm tall.
32. (C) β = λD/d = (500 × 10⁻⁹ × 1)/(0.5 × 10⁻³) = 10⁻³ m = 1 mm.
33. (D) By Brewster's law μ = tan 60° = √3. The critical angle C satisfies sin C = 1/μ = 1/√3.
34. (D) v = c/√(μᵣεᵣ) = (3 × 10⁸)/√(1 × 4) = 1.5 × 10⁸ m/s.
35. (D) Photon energy = 1240/310 = 4.0 eV. K(max) = 4.0 − 2.5 = 1.5 eV, so the stopping potential is 1.5 V.
ₙ
36. (B) r ∝ n²/Z. For Li²⁺, n = 3: 9/3 = 3 times the first Bohr radius of hydrogen.
37. (C) When 75% has decayed, 25% = 1/4 remains, which takes two half-lives = 40 minutes.
38. (C) λ(max) = hc/E(g) = 1240/1.1 ≈ 1127 nm, in the near infrared.
39. (C) With A = B, Y = (A·A)' = A', which is the NOT operation.
40. (B) β = ΔI(C)/ΔI(B) = 1/0.02 = 50.
Chemistry
41. (C) Molar mass of H₂SO₄ = 98 g/mol, so 49 g = 0.5 mol. Each molecule has 4 O atoms: 0.5 × 4 = 2 mol of O atoms.
42. (B) Moles needed = 0.2 × 0.250 = 0.05 mol. Mass = 0.05 × 106 = 5.3 g.
43. (D) By Graham's law r ∝ 1/√M: r(H₂)/r(O₂) = √(32/2) = √16 = 4.
44. (C) The number of orbitals in a shell is n² = 16 (one 4s, three 4p, five 4d and seven 4f).
45. (B) 46 g ethanol = 1 mol and 36 g water = 2 mol. Mole fraction of ethanol = 1/(1 + 2) = 1/3. (0.56 is its mass
fraction.)
46. (B) By Raoult's law p = p⁰ × x(solvent) = 100 × 0.8 = 80 mm Hg.
47. (C) CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O. ΔH = [−393.5 + 2(−285.8)] − (−74.8) = −965.1 + 74.8 = −890.3 kJ/mol.
48. (A) Kp = Kc(RT)^Δn, with Δn = 2 − 3 = −1.
49. (D) [OH⁻] = 2 × 10⁻³ M, so pOH = 3 − 0.30 = 2.70 and pH = 14 − 2.70 = 11.3.
50. (C) CrO₅ has one O²⁻ and two O₂²⁻ groups: x − 2 − 2(2) = 0, so x = +6. (Taking all O as −2 would wrongly give +10.)
51. (A) Mn changes from +7 to +2, a gain of 5 electrons per ion, so 5 faradays are needed per mole.
52. (A) For zero order, [A] = [A]₀ − kt, so t½ = [A]₀/(2k), which is directly proportional to [A]₀.
53. (D) By the Hardy–Schulze rule a negative sol is coagulated by cations, and the higher the charge, the greater the
power: Al³⁺ > Ba²⁺ > Na⁺.
54. (D) Fluorine is very small, so the added electron feels strong repulsion in the compact 2p shell. Chlorine therefore
has the most negative electron gain enthalpy.
55. (B) S has 4 bond pairs and 1 lone pair (5 electron pairs): sp³d, with the lone pair in an equatorial position, giving a
see-saw shape.
56. (B) SO₂ is bent (S has a lone pair), so the bond moments do not cancel. CO₂ and BeF₂ are linear and CCl₄ is
tetrahedral, so their bond moments cancel.
57. (D) Diborane has four terminal B–H bonds (two-centre two-electron) and two bridging B–H–B 'banana' bonds
(three-centre two-electron). There is no B–B bond.

58. (D) NO has an odd number of electrons (15), so one electron is unpaired. The other oxides listed have all electrons
paired.
59. (C) H₃PO₃ is HPO(OH)₂: one H is bonded directly to P and is not ionisable. Only the two O–H hydrogens are acidic.
60. (B) Li⁺ is the smallest ion and is the most heavily hydrated, so its hydrated ion is the largest and moves the slowest.
61. (D) Zone refining suits semiconductors such as Ge and Si. Copper is refined electrolytically, zirconium by the van
Arkel method and nickel by the Mond process.
62. (C) Down group 14 the ns² pair is reluctant to take part in bonding, so Pb(II) is more stable than Pb(IV); this is why
PbO₂ is a strong oxidising agent.
63. (C) Cr³⁺ is 3d³ with 3 unpaired electrons: μ = √[3(3 + 2)] = √15 ≈ 3.87 BM.
64. (D) The complex ion is an anion, so iron is named 'ferrate'. Three C₂O₄²⁻ ligands give −6, and the charge is −3, so
Fe is +3.
65. (D) The trans isomer has a mirror plane (1 isomer). The cis isomer is chiral and exists as a pair of enantiomers (2).
Total = 3.
66. (A) Ni is in the 0 state (3d⁸4s²). CO is a strong-field ligand: the 4s electrons pair into 3d, giving 3d^10, and 4s4p³
(sp³) orbitals form a tetrahedral, diamagnetic complex.
67. (B) Ziegler–Natta catalyst is triethylaluminium with titanium tetrachloride. Pd/BaSO₄ is Lindlar's catalyst (partly
poisoned).
68. (C) α emission lowers A by 4 and Z by 2: Th-234 (Z = 90). Each β⁻ raises Z by 1 with no change in A: U-234 (Z =
92), an isotope of the parent.
69. (D) o-Nitrophenol has intramolecular hydrogen bonding, so it is steam volatile. p-Nitrophenol is held by
intermolecular hydrogen bonds and stays behind.
70. (D) C : H = 80/12 : 20/1 = 6.67 : 20 = 1 : 3, so the empirical formula is CH₃ (the molecule could be C₂H₆).
71. (A) The +I effect of the methyl group destabilises the carboxylate ion. pKa values: acetic 4.76, benzoic 4.20, formic
3.75, fluoroacetic about 2.6.
72. (D) Hydroboration–oxidation adds H and OH across the double bond in an anti-Markovnikov way, so OH ends up
on the terminal carbon.
73. (D) Cl deactivates the ring (−I) but directs the incoming group to the ortho and para positions (+R), so 1,2- and 1,4-
dichlorobenzene are formed, the para isomer in larger amount.
74. (A) Three nitro groups (−M and −I) strongly stabilise the phenoxide ion, so picric acid is by far the most acidic. A
methyl group lowers acidity.
75. (B) Aldol condensation needs an α-hydrogen. In (CH₃)₃C–CHO the α-carbon carries no hydrogen.
76. (D) H₃PO₂ (or ethanol) reduces the diazonium group and replaces –N₂⁺ by H, giving benzene. Warming with water
would give phenol.
77. (B) Neoprene, a synthetic rubber, is polychloroprene. Natural rubber is a polymer of isoprene; PVC is from vinyl
chloride.
78. (D) Lactose (milk sugar) is made of β-D-galactose and β-D-glucose linked by a glycosidic bond. Sucrose gives
glucose and fructose, maltose gives glucose only.
79. (A) Aspartame (a dipeptide methyl ester) breaks down on heating. Saccharin and sucralose are stable at cooking
temperature.
80. (B) Photochemical smog forms from NOₓ and hydrocarbons in sunlight and contains O₃, PAN and aldehydes.
Classical smog is smoke plus SO₂ and its acid products.
Mathematics

82. (A) We need x² − 9 > 0 (strictly, as it is under a root in the denominator), so |x| > 3.
83. (C) (g∘f)(1) = g(f(1)) = g(5) = 25 − 1 = 24. (f∘g)(1) would be f(0) = 3.
84. (D) (1 + i)/(1 − i) = i, so the expression is i^8 × (1 + i)² = 1 × 2i = 2i.
85. (A) arg(1 + i√3) = π/3 and arg(1 − i) = −π/4. The argument of the quotient is π/3 + π/4 = 7π/12, which lies in (−π, π].

86. (C) |2A| = 2³ × 4 = 32. For order 3, |adj B| = |B|², so |adj(2A)| = 32² = 1024.
87. (D) Third minus first: y − 2z = −7. Second minus twice the first: −3y − z = 0, so z = −3y. Then 7y = −7: y = −1, z = 3
and x = 2.
88. (B) The coefficient determinant must be zero: k³ − 3k + 2 = (k − 1)²(k + 2) = 0, so k = 1 or k = −2.
89. (C) α + β = 3, αβ = 3/2. α² + β² = 9 − 3 = 6, so 1/α² + 1/β² = 6/(9/4) = 8/3.
90. (A) 7 letters with L twice and E twice: 7!/(2! × 2!) = 5040/4 = 1260.
91. (B) Arrange the boys in 5! = 120 ways. That leaves 6 gaps; choose and fill 3 of them with the girls in ⁶P₃ = 120
ways. Total = 120 × 120 = 14400.
92. (A) T(r+1) = C(6,r)(2x)^(6−r)(−1/x²)^r = C(6,r)2^(6−r)(−1)^r x^(6−3r). r = 2 gives 15 × 16 = 240.
93. (B) Coefficient of x^r is C(n,r)2^(n−r)3^(−r). Equating r = 2 and r = 3: 6 C(n,2) = C(n,3), so 3 = (n − 2)/6 and n = 20.
94. (C) a(10) = S(10) − S(9) = (300 + 20) − (243 + 18) = 320 − 261 = 59.

96. (A) 1 − cos 4x = 2 sin² 2x, so the limit = 2 × (2)² × lim (sin 2x/2x)² = 8.
97. (A) tan y − sin y = y³/2 + higher terms. With y = 2x this is 8x³/2 = 4x³, so the limit is 4.
98. (B) Let y = x^x, so ln y = x ln x. Then y'/y = ln x + 1, so y' = x^x(1 + ln x).
99. (C) f'(x) = e^(−x)(1 − x) = 0 at x = 1, where f changes from increasing to decreasing. f(1) = 1/e.
100. (A) dy/dx = 3x² − 12 = 0 gives x = ±2; y(2) = 8 − 24 + 1 = −15 and y(−2) = −8 + 24 + 1 = 17.
101. (B) ∫ dx/(x² − a²) = (1/2a) ln|(x − a)/(x + a)| + C with a = 2.
102. (A) This is ∫ e^x [f(x) + f'(x)] dx with f(x) = 1/x, f'(x) = −1/x², so the answer is e^x f(x) + C = e^x/x + C.
103. (D) tan² x = sec² x − 1, so the integral is [tan x − x]₀^(π/4) = 1 − π/4.
104. (C) They meet at x = ±2. Area = ∫₋₂² (4 − x²) dx = 16 − 16/3 = 32/3.
105. (B) Write p = dy/dx. Removing the root: (y − xp)² = 1 + p², which is of degree 2 in p. The highest derivative is the
first, so order 1, degree 2.
106. (D) Integrating factor e^x: d(y e^x)/dx = 1, so y e^x = x + C and y = (x + C)e^(−x).
107. (B) The second line is 5x − 12y − 9 = 0. Distance = |4 − (−9)|/√(25 + 144) = 13/13 = 1.
108. (D) r² = 3² + 4² = 25. (x − 2)² + (y + 3)² = 25 expands to x² + y² − 4x + 6y + 13 − 25 = 0, i.e. x² + y² − 4x + 6y − 12 =
0.
109. (B) x² + (y − 2)² = (y + 2)² simplifies to x² = 8y.
110. (B) x²/25 + y²/9 = 1, so a² = 25, b² = 9 and e = √(1 − 9/25) = 4/5.
111. (A) |3(2) − 6(3) + 2(4) + 11|/√(9 + 36 + 4) = |6 − 18 + 8 + 11|/7 = 7/7 = 1.
112. (A) cos θ = |(1)(2) + (1)(−1) + (2)(1)|/(√6 × √6) = 3/6 = 1/2, so θ = 60°.
113. (C) a × b = 8î − 10ĵ + 4k̂ , so |a × b| = √(64 + 100 + 16) = √180 = 6√5.
114. (C) Their scalar triple product must be zero: (λ − 1) + 3λ + (−2 − λ) = 3λ − 3 = 0, so λ = 1.
115. (A) (4/52) × (3/51) = 12/2652 = 1/221.
116. (A) C(5,3)(1/2)⁵ = 10/32 = 5/16.
117. (A) np = 6 and npq = 2 give q = 1/3, so p = 2/3 and n = 6/(2/3) = 9.
118. (D) cos 36° = (√5 + 1)/4 and cos 72° = (√5 − 1)/4. Their product is (5 − 1)/16 = 1/4.
119. (B) (2cos x − 1)(cos x − 1) = 0 gives cos x = 1 (x = 2nπ) or cos x = 1/2 (x = 2nπ ± π/3).
120. (C) cos⁻¹(12/13) = sin⁻¹(5/13). sin(A + B) = (3/5)(12/13) + (4/5)(5/13) = 36/65 + 20/65 = 56/65; both angles are acute
and the sum is below π/2, so it equals sin⁻¹(56/65).
