combines expressions (Bhava), melody (Raga), rhythm (Tala), and dance movements (Natya), which
together form the name "Bharatanatyam."
Initially, Bharatanatyam was performed by temple dancers known as devadasis as part of religious
rituals. Over time, it evolved into a respected art form performed on grand stages worldwide. The dance

Edgar Allan Poe, a name synonymous with macabre tales and haunting poetry, lived a life as dramatic as his
works. Born in 1809, Poe's childhood was marked by tragedy. Orphaned at a young age, he was adopted by
the Allan family, who provided him with a privileged education. However, his relationship with his adoptive
father was difficult, leading to estrangement and ultimately impacting his future.
Poe's literary career began with poetry, but he gained fame for his short stories, particularly those of mystery
and the supernatural. Tales like "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Raven," and "The Fall of the House of Usher"
explored themes of guilt, madness, and the fragility of the human psyche, captivating readers with their eerie
atmosphere and psychological intensity.
Despite his literary success, Poe's life was plagued by personal demons. He struggled with alcoholism and
depression. His marriage to Virginia Clemm brought him a brief period of happiness, but her tragic death
from tuberculosis plunged him into a deep abyss of grief. This loss deeply affected his writing, adding a layer
of sadness to his already dark and introspective works. Poe's life was cut short at the age of 40 under
mysterious circumstances. His death, possibly due to alcohol poisoning or heart disease, remains unsolved
even today.

55 | P a g e

Page 53

Despite the darkness that filled his life, Poe's literary contributions are undeniable. His innovative use of

proving that the power of his words transcends the tragic circumstances of his life.

Millet refers to various cereal grasses in the Poaceae family, cultivated for their small edible seeds. These
grains were first grown in Asia and Africa over 4,000 years ago and were a major food source in Europe
during the Middle Ages. While primarily used for animal feed in the United States and Western Europe,
millet remains a crucial food staple in many developing countries. Due to their resilience, millets are seen as
a solution to food insecurity in regions with unstable climates, such as India and sub-Saharan Africa.
Recognizing their importance, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization declared 2023 as “the
year of the millets.”
Millets contain high levels of carbohydrates, with protein content ranging from 6% to 11% and fat content
from 1.5% to 5%. They have a strong taste and are mainly consumed as flatbreads, porridges, or rice
substitutes.
Most millet varieties grow annually, reaching heights between 30 cm and 130 cm (1 to 4 feet), except for
pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum), which grows up to 3 meters (10 feet) tall with thick stalks. Their
flowering structures, called inflorescences, may appear as spikes, racemes, or dense panicles. Except for
pearl millet, their seeds remain covered in hulls even after threshing.

56 | P a g e

Page 54

Millets are more tolerant of poor soils and drought than many other grains. They thrive in harsh conditions
with minimal fertilizers and pesticides. Additionally, certain deep-rooted varieties help reduce soil erosion
and combat desertification.
a) What family do millets belong to?
b) In which regions was millet first cultivated?
c) How long ago were millets first grown?
d) Where does millet remain a crucial food source?

V. 30. Read the following passage and answer the questions set on it. 9x1=9
The tale of Pandora and her jar is one of the most famous myths from ancient Greece. It's a story that explores
themes of curiosity, temptation, and the complexities of human existence. The myth of Pandora is primarily
found in the works of the Greek poet Hesiod, who lived around the 8th century BC.
According to the myth, the gods were angry with humans. Prometheus, a Titan, had stolen fire from the gods
and given it to humanity, a gift that greatly benefited humankind. To punish them, Zeus, the king of the gods,
decided to create a woman named Pandora. Pandora was a beautiful and alluring creature, crafted by
Hephaestus, the god of fire and metalworking. Each of the gods bestowed gifts upon her, making her
irresistible to men. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, adorned her with fine clothing and jewellery—Aphrodite,
the goddess of love, bestowed upon her beauty and charm. Hermes, the messenger god, gave her the gift of
persuasion.
Zeus then presented Pandora with a large jar, instructing her never to open it. Naturally, curiosity got the
better of her. Unable to resist the temptation, Pandora lifted the lid of the jar. Immediately, a swarm of evils
and misfortunes escaped – disease, suffering, sorrow, and even death itself. Horrified, Pandora quickly closed
the lid, trapping the remaining evils within. However, one thing remained inside the jar – hope.
While the myth is often referred to as "Pandora's box," the original Greek text uses the word "pithos," which
translates to "jar" or "large storage vessel." The confusion between "jar" and "box" likely stems from a
mistranslation in later versions of the myth. The myth of Pandora's jar has had a profound impact on Western
culture. The phrase "opening Pandora's box" has become a common idiom, used to describe an action that
unleashes unforeseen and often negative consequences.
Despite the release of evils, the myth of Pandora also offers a hopeful message. The story of Pandora's Jar
serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked curiosity and the potential consequences of our
actions. However, it also reminds us that even in the darkest times, there is always hope for a brighter future.

a. Who is the author of the myth of Pandora?
b. Which Titan stole fire from the gods and gave it to humanity?
c. What was the name of the king of the gods who punished humanity?
a. Hephaestus b. Athena c. Zeus
d. What was the name of the god who bestowed the gift of persuasion upon Pandora?
e. What instruction did Zeus give Pandora regarding the jar
f. What types of evils escaped from the jar when Pandora opened it?

The Amazon Rainforest, often called the "lungs of the Earth," produces nearly 20% of the world's oxygen
and is home to an astonishing variety of wildlife. It spans nine countries and covers approximately 5.5
million square kilometers. The rainforest is vital for regulating global temperatures and acts as a significant
carbon sink, absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide.
However, deforestation poses a severe threat to the Amazon. Logging, agriculture, and urbanization have
led to the loss of millions of hectares of forest. Scientists warn that if deforestation continues at its current
rate, it could lead to irreversible damage to the ecosystem. The loss of trees not only affects biodiversity
but also contributes to climate change by releasing stored carbon into the atmosphere.

Many conservation efforts are underway to protect the Amazon. Governments, environmental
organizations, and indigenous communities are working together to preserve this crucial ecosystem.
Reforestation projects, stricter laws against illegal logging, and sustainable farming practices are some of
the measures being implemented. If global awareness and action increase, the Amazon Rainforest can still
be saved for future generations.
