36. Once upon a time, there was a beautiful rose plant in a garden. One rose flower on the plant was
proud of its beauty. However, it was disappointed that it was growing next to an ugly cactus. Every
day, the rose would insult the cactus about its looks, but the cactus stayed quiet. All the other plants
in the garden tried to stop the rose from bullying the cactus, but the rose was too swayed by its own
beauty to listen to anyone.

One summer, a well in the garden dried up and there was no water for the plants. The rose slowly
began to dry. The rose saw a sparrow dip its beak into the cactus for some water. The rose then felt
ashamed for having made fun of the cactus all this time. But because it was in need of water, it went
to ask the cactus if it could have some water. The kind cactus agreed, and they both got through
summer as friends.

in time. The theft continued to nag him. He gave away 100 new bicycles to the

24. M.G.Menon’s missing leather pouch contained, among other things, Rs.560 in 2
cash, an important medical prescription and the duplicate keys to his apartment.

He rescued devadasi from prostitution and helped to marry an educated youth.
He has helped more than a dozen women get married without having to pay
dowry, as well as three young widows remarried. He has paid for the education
for poor girls.
IV. Answer the following questions in four or five sentences each: 4x3=12
25. The poetess Sarojini Naidu in the poem, ‘Autumn Song’ compares the joy in
the heart of sorrow to the sunset behind the clouds. She describes how the wild
wind takes away the delicate bunches of wheat and leaves. The heart of the
poetess is sad and alone as her dreams have gone like the fluttering leaves in the
wild wind. She is optimistic; she affirms that she would not stay behind. Similarly,
she also tells us not to stay behind thinking of the past, but motivates us to move
forward in life.
OR
In the poem, ‘Prayers For Dumb Creatures’, the poet G. E. Goodrich shows his 3
compassion and kindness to the dumb creatures. He praises God, who is the
creator of the earth, sea and sky for placing the stars on high and making the
sparrow’s wings alike. He prays to God for the dumb creatures to listen to the
voiceless prayers of the dumb creatures. God has created them for us, so who are
we to deny their rights, as God’s seal of love is laid on them. The poet prays to
God to teach us to listen to the pleas of the dumb creatures as God listens to us.
26. We can test the faithfulness of our friends in many ways. Faithful friends
never entice to vice. They never call us as bountiful when we are prodigal. We
can see if they help us in our miseries or not. We can see if they stand by us in our

difficulties or not. We can see if they protect us from doing evil or not. We can
see if they stay with us when we lose wealth.
27. Kashmir passes in a procession of beauty during spring season. Different types
of flowers make their appearances. First comes the delicate pink almond, as soon
as it shed its petals, the white cherry, and the pink and white apple blossom. Then

come the irises of royal purple, growing as high as man’s waist and filling whole

fields with their stately blooms. Next appears the Persian lilac.

28. The first task was to find out the thousand pearls hidden under the moss. As
he sat thinking about the task he saw the ant king whose life and house he had
saved coming towards him. The ant king had brought with him five thousand of
his ants and found all the pearls and piled them up in a large heap. Second task
was to bring the key of princess sleeping room from the bottom of the lake where

it was sunk. The ducks whose life he had saved dived into the lake and got the
keys for him.

35. The floating gardens of Dal Lake are unique. One end of the lake is reserved
for this. Their owners pay no rent for it. They themselves make the ground for the
gardens. They make a sort of platform of reeds and anchor it to stakes. Then, they
bring up the mud from the bottom of the lake and place it in little heaps on the
platform. Finally, they plant on them the seedlings of vegetables, mostly
cucumber. The garden requires no watering and can easily be tended from the
end of a boat which extends from them.
OR
Once Turan was at war with Persia. Sohrab saw a chance in it to meet his father, 4
Rustum. The war began. The two heroes fought fiercely for three days. Once,
Sohrab had a chance to Kill Rustum, but he did not do so, as his heart did not
permit it. The first stage of the fighting ended in Sohrab’s favour. This made
Rustum very angry. In his great rage, he shouted his own name, ‘Rustum!’ The
moment Sohrab heard the name of his father; he dropped the covering shield, as
he did not want to fight with his father. He felt fainted and sank to the ground.

37. a) Flood and its effects

A flood happens when water overflows onto land that is usually dry. Heavy rain,
overflowing rivers, or sudden release of water from dams can cause floods.
Floods can damage houses, roads, crops, and property. Many people lose their

homes and need to move to safer places.

Floodwater also causes diseases because it gets mixed with sewage and dirt.
Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, leading to illnesses like dengue. Animals and
birds also lose their homes during floods.

Floods can harm the environment by causing soil erosion and destroying trees.
However, they can also make the soil fertile by bringing nutrient-rich sediments.

To reduce the effects of floods, we must improve drainage systems, avoid cutting
trees, and build houses in safe areas. With good planning and awareness, the
damage caused by floods can be reduced.

OR

b)National festivals

National festivals are important celebrations that remind us of our country’s
history and achievements. They bring people together and create a sense of pride
and unity. In India, the main national festivals are Independence Day, Republic

Day, and Gandhi Jayanthi.

Independence Day is celebrated on 15th August to mark India’s freedom from
British rule. Republic Day is observed on 26th January, the day our Constitution
came into force. Gandhi Jayanthi, celebrated on 2nd October, honours Mahatma
Gandhi and his principles of truth and non-violence. On these days, flag-hoisting
ceremonies, cultural programs, and tribute events are held across the country.

National festivals help us remember our leaders, freedom fighters, and the values
that shape our nation. They inspire us to be responsible citizens and to work for
the progress of our country. These festivals strengthen our unity and remind us of
our shared identity as Indians.

c) Air Pollution

Air pollution occurs when harmful gases, smoke, and dust mix with the air around
us. It is mainly caused by vehicle emissions, factory smoke, burning of fossil fuels,
and the improper disposal of waste. Construction activities and the burning of
forests also add to polluted air. These activities reduce the quality of the air we
breathe and make the environment unhealthy.

Air pollution has many harmful effects on both humans and nature. It can cause
breathing problems, asthma, allergies, and other serious health issues. Animals
and plants are also affected because polluted air damages crops, reduces growth,
and disturbs natural habitats. It also contributes to global warming, climate
change, and acid rain, which further harm the environment.

To control air pollution, everyone must work together. The government should
enforce strict pollution control laws and encourage the use of clean energy.
People can help by planting more trees, using bicycles or public transport, and
avoiding the burning of garbage. By taking small but meaningful steps, we can
reduce air pollution and create a cleaner, healthier world.
