Section – B (Reading)

Q.2. Read the passage given below and give answer the questions that follow:

Do we know the difference between knowledge and wisdom? Is there a need to
know the difference between them? Are we well equipped to handle the vagaries of
existence with what is known to us? Knowledge means all that we acquire from what we
read, hear or see. Wisdom means the ability to choose from what is available to us and
then use it for our own benefit. Today the world has started talking about the value based
education. What does it mean? In simple terms it means two things. First, it accepts that
current education has badly let down.

Secondly, it lays stress on values, and hence wisdom, instead of mere knowledge.
How do we acquire this value based education? The answer becomes simple if we need.
We need education only to make us live better and more joyously. Once we know this we
must add only those things in education which achieve this aim. The dictum that "a
healthy mind can exist only in a healthy body" is a time tested one Schools, thus become
sources of healthy bodies too.

This can best be achieved by yoga because games are beyond our financial
capabilities. Yoga is very beneficial. It occupies so little space, and can be done without
the least bit of fuss. One wonders why schools have not adopted it as a mandatory subject
at all levels.

(A) On the basis of your reading answer the following briefly: 3x1=3

(i) What does knowledge mean?
(ii) What does wisdom mean?
(iii) What is Value based education?

(B) True or False 2x1=2

(i) Wisdom means all that we acquire from what we read, hear or see.

(ii) There is no difference between Knowledge and wisdom.

(C) Find word from the passage words which convey the same meaning as: 3x1=3

(ⅰ) obligatory (Para 3) (ii) maxim (Para 2) (iii) an advantage (Para 1)

Q.3. Read the passage given below and give answer the questions that follow:

Discipline is of paramount importance in human life. Life without discipline is
just like a boat without an oar. It is discipline that takes an individual, a community or a
nation to the zenith of glory. It is in fact, the very basis of a successful, meaningful and
purposeful living. It heightens the worth of a man and ensures respect for him.

Discipline is the training of the mind and the body to produce obedience to certain
personal, familial, social, intellectual and moral norms. In general, it is following a
system of code of conduct particularly to an institution. Discipline means voluntary or
involuntary exercise of some restrictions on one's whims, desires and appetite. In several
spheres of life, such as police, army, government institutions, schools and colleges,
discipline is essential. It is strictly enforced whether a particular member likes it or not. In
some other spheres, such as social, political or professional organisations, discipline is
usually voluntary which means that the member who refuses to obey certain norms and
discipline of the organisation is free to leave it.

Many youngsters regard discipline as an unnecessary restriction and control on
their desires and ambitions. They feel that the elders impose discipline on them in order
to maintain their own position of authority. Absolute liberty is not desirable, especially
when it becomes a licence to do whatever one likes. The moment it begins to interfere
with the liberty of others, it has to be restricted. The liberty of an individual must be
limited; he must not make himself a nuisance to other people. This is what discipline tries
to ensure; a synthesis of personal liberty and social, moral and national obligations.

Discipline is thus essential for the well-being of the individual, society and the
nation on the whole as discipline imposes a desirable check not only on us but on others
as well. We can enjoy our liberty without fear. Lack of discipline will send the human
civilization to the age of primitive barbarity.

Discipline is meant for our own welfare. Take the example of food habits. There
is no social, moral or political restriction imposed on how much we eat. But over eating,
we all know, results in our ill health. If there is no discipline in family, society and
different institutions, every person will be the master of his own will; the result will be
the total confusion everywhere. If an army is lacking in discipline, it will not be able to
give a united and determined fight to the enemy. If the citizens of a country do not obey
the law of the land the result will be complete anarchy. Therefore, we should accept
discipline voluntarily and make it a part of our life.

(A) On the basis of your reading of the above passage make notes on it, in points only,
using recognizable abbreviations where necessary. 4

(B) Find from the passage words which convey the same meaning as: 3x1=3

(i) Necessary (Para 1) (ii) Freedom (Para 3) (iii) Lawlessness (Para 5)
